The nearly perfect safari rifle

Or one of those nice inlaid metal butt plates.... what are they called ' skeleton butt plates' ?
Oh sorry, I forgot its a 375....

It's getting the Neidner skeleton grip cap and I did think of doing the same butt furnishing Kevan.................but like you observed it is a .375 and I'm neither as young or as tough as I once was. To my thinking that sort of butt finishing is for cals of 270 and under. It wouldn't bother me when hunting but working loads from the bench could be a real b!tch.... LOL

My dream rifle would be a 275 Roberts with that kind of butt, nice lightweight little deer rifle for walks in the woods..... hurry 6/49!
Speaking of Neidner.... many years ago my late Brother bought a well used custom built '03 Springfield with the stamp ' 25 Neidner ' on the barrel.
He never parted with his guns so its likely still in one of his safes..

I have a question for those of you out there that like classic safari rifles.................should I go with a black recoil pad or the more classic red recoil pad. My stockmaker usually does red, but I said black Packmayr presentation..........can be changed at this point..........so what say you? I am truly undecided and somewhat torn on this issue..........

Black with ebony forend / Red with out .

How about a leather covered pad? I have a Bolliger Signature series .375 in the works right now and that is what I have ordered. Otherwise I think your black Pachmayr will do nicely. Or even a silvers........

If you really want it to look right, you could get a red Silver's pad put on it... then it could almost pass for an English built gun. Still needs a Mauser action though... :p

I prefer red.

only time anyone is "carrying" my gun on a hunt is if I'm being carried out.

Although no longer fashionable, what with weight restrictions, firearm import fees, and so on, not so long ago, it wasn't unusual to go to Africa with a number of rifles. If you were following up say a herd of wildebeest, in an area that was known to be prime lion country, it would be prudent to carry the heavy while the help carried the light rifle. There are plenty of horror stories (true or not) where the client who finds himself in immediate need of his stopping rifle, attempts to swap rifles with his bearer only to look back just in time to see his man with his heavy disappear over yon hill. Another problem that came up was allowing, or in some cases demanding, that the help clean your rifle at the end of each day. That's a sure fire method of having the bedding soaked in oil and having bolts mismatched in rifles, which could lead to excitement the following day if unnoticed. Well, safaris are supposed to me memorable. Today though, on a hunt that includes dangerous game, one tends to do everything with just a .375 or a .416, and if a serious problem arises, the PH is supposed to handle it.

I like a scope sighted rifle for practically everything, including dangerous game hunting. Its a better tool for hunting, shooting through small opening in brush, finding the vitals on a black blob in the bush, and making sure you are on the right black blob amongst all the other black blobs. Its the best tool for placing the first shot where its supposed to go, which is the hunter's job. On a follow-up it would be possible that irons would be better, but even then you have the same visibility problems and are probably better off leaving the scope in place.

Having said that, there is the slight chance that irons, on the biggest, baddest chunk of iron that you can carry are exactly what you need and close to the only thing that is good for anything. Heck, when its gotten that bad even no sights at all would be better than the scope. If someone wanted to carry such a rifle around that I could grab in that contingency I'd be OK with it.

The reality is I'm probably farther ahead practicing heads up shooting unsighted with the scoped rifle. I wish I would have thought of that before this year, its a ##### of a thing to learn on the fly.;)

Red...blech! You need something like this so people know at a glance that it's a safari rifle....lol
