Green tip is not armour defeating. It's NATO standard ball 5.56mm ammunition.

I'm thinking my FMJ 7.62x51 should have enough energy to penetrate these things... they don't appear to be very heavily armored.

Entirely likely and the probability is high, but there are a lot of people that think FMJ is armour defeating, and it isn't. AP 7.62 is barely armour defeating lol.
