the newer mossberg patriots?

hey gents- im not sure i posted about the mossbergs on cgn?
im wanting feedback on the patriot model with the fluted barrel?

reason i ask is i think i will be selling my Marlin X7 here in Aus to fund a rifle in NZ along the lines of the budget battlers and mossberg is at a decent price in NZ........
youtube says its ok... what do CGNers think of it?

NZD is a little higher than AUD for guns, ex a rem 700 is say $1200 here, in nz it is $1400.......... i will look for 2nd hand in my price range where i may end up with anything but from what i see, Mossys in a .243 sounds great and at worst a 308....


I rekon the ATR100s are a POS to be honest, so how much better is the Patriot model?
where does it sit over my Marlin x7?

I don't know about your Marlin, but I do know about my Mossberg Patriot. I bought the wooden stocked model with the accu-trigger in .308 as a deer gun. This will be my first hunt with it, but the accuracy is lovely with my handloads, sub MOA. There was a pleasant surprise when I got it since, at that price point, I expected a nice hardwood stock. Imagine my surprise when I found out that it was walnut. It cycles nicely, feels good, no creep in the trigger, and I'm well content. I'm not a fan of the plastic mag and it's a little finicky, but they had to cut corners somewhere to make that price point. Overall, I'd say you won't go wrong buying one.

Copy that Lawrence, I noticed the Patriot also has the "accu-trigger" as does my Marlin, although its a blind magazine which i feel is fine for a mountain rifle where loading an unloading seldom happens which coincides with the oppertunitie of firing many shots if the moment arises!
your view of the Patriot is what i was chasing, thats enough for me to be happy with one.
 
I have a close friend who bought one. As basically an entry level rifle, it is an amazing shooter!
I am not a fan of any accutrigger, but it is fine for many people, including my friend.
He will get a chance to make it work for him soon. We will hunt deer this long weekend. D.
 
I would buy anything else. Get a Remington 783 if you can. Much better firearm with better aftermarket support.

In Canada, Mossbergs rifles are sloppy and overpriced junk. Accuracy isn’t anything to celebrate as literally any new gun can achieve sub-minute groupings with good ammo.

Hmmm, so, my Mossberg Patriot .270 put 2 dear in the freezer, the last 2 seasons from around 100 yards. Never a failure sighting it in. Sloppy junk? Maybe you are used to sloppy something? Grip it a little tighter....

Congratulations on hitting two 12" targets at 100 yards. You must be so proud.

Doesn't change the fact that the rifle is sloppy junk. Bolt are loose, finishes are poor, magazines are terrible, and those blue boxes line the warranty bin at my local shooting store. OP, do yourself a favor and buy anything but the Mossberg.

Yup. I am proud. My sloppy Mossberg fed my family 2 years in a row. Just like you must be proud that your welfare check fed yours 2 years in a row? ####! For the money, a Mossberg Patriot is hard to beat. It will get the job done. After all, a firearm has very few jobs. Feed the family, protect the family and, waaaay down the list, punch paper.

Now now children, play nice! Heliace, I agree with you. I love my Mossberg Patriot. Blastattack seems to have a strong personal anti-Mossberg bias, and he's entitled to vent and express his opinion just as we are entitled to disagree (strongly!) with it. Let's all just keep it civil, shall we? Here's what mine did when I was sighting it in for my deer load.

The 783 is almost a clone of the X7...Rem kinda borrowed a bunch of the design when the parent company bought Marlin.
To the OP...you already have a better rifle then the Mossberg, you would be downgrading in quality.

yes i understand however i am moving to another country and its sort of easier to purchase after i do a firearms license test in the country than to take one of mine over an store it whilst i move here an there!

783, X7 if one pops up or the mossy for the price of a new one in NZ fits my deal..... of course a 2nd hand rem 700 or a bolt , im just looking into if i do go an buy new, withthe current options in nz, for my budget of course! :)

ive got my montana an treat it like a baby...... iv had tikkas an treat em like a bolt 3s :p the one i mistreat the most an its as strong as an ox is my Whelen M77 Mk2 Hawkeye but its a hefty bugger an not needed in nz!

im lookin for like 243-708 or a 270win class calibre for Red stag an the Goats...Chamois an Tahr! all the budgets come in a few of these choices! i have a Zeiss terra 3-9x to put ontop to save my NZD budget!

its very much on the Cards come january and February when i have to head back home, will look into it closer to then, i just dont wanna end u havin issues with it an having to keep it in nz for whatever reason due to import back to aus.... typically no drama but because im a little "one way" at the moment.

its got a job to do in aussie :D

I hear ya, I also have a bunch of the newer budget rifles and don't have any complaints.
We are also lucky here with Tradex as they bring in lots of used gems that are 40-60 years old in fantastic condition. I try to keep my rifle budget to $500 and they have dozens and dozens to choose from in that range.
 
For the budget rifles, the Remington 783 has the nicest action. It is also the heaviest. The patriot is decent and can be had for $600 with a Vortex Crossfire scope, which IMO is probably the best value available. They all (Axis, 783, Patriot) shoot well and do the job.
