Ultimate or most popular?
Most popular i would say 30-06 but Ultimate.. i would lean toward the 338winmag reason being, it will do everything in North America you could ask of a cartridge and most of Africa

Since that includes coastal grizzly,I chose the most powerful cartridge listed, the 300winmag.I would rather have more than enough cartridge on smaller game than be on the weak side on larger game, especially dangerous game.

Since my favorite the Win .270 wasn't listed :D, I chose the 7mm. It has the speed & power to take any N.American game animal IMHO. The only exception might be the Grizzly, but if proper bullet selection/placement is done, the 7mm will do the job.

The results speak for themselves. Problem with the 300 Win Mag is, a fair % of shooters have difficulty handling the recoil it doles out, and thus do not practice enough with the heavy hitters. Regards, Eagleye.

For me it was a close tie between .303, and 30.06, but .303 won.
Enfields are hard to beat IMHO.

If I hunted in the USA it would have been 30.06, and even then it would be in a nice heavy recoil absorbing P17. :p

For me much of this is based on availability of ammo in an emergency.

What kind of an ultimate list is that, and for what part of North America, certainly NOT all of it, truly a silly question.

I picked 300 Win Mag because 338 RUM wasn't listed, considering the sized of some bears and moose in North America I think that bigger is better. You might consider 338 RUM too much for deer but the 3 I shot last year with it didn't seem to mind.
