So my brother picks up his new Mossberg 590A1 and asks me to come and show him and his friends how to use it. I have the same shotgun and use it quite heavily (just on paper lol) so I had agreed to this before he bought it.

Now my brother is relatively new to shotguns so he let the Bass Pro guy recommend some nice magnum buckshot (I think they were 3" 12 pellet 00buck) to learn to use a shotgun with! When I got to the range it was too late to get any other shells so against my recommendation we went ahead with the lesson.

I should also mention that my brother had decided that there was no reason to chuck a "perfectly good" stock recoil pad and spend $40 on an aftermarket one. I recall the slang term for cat was thrown about that day...

Needless to say my bro and his buddies took a serious beating that day. They each shot about 50 rounds until I saw that some of them had their eyes closed when they pulled the trigger! I had only shot it about 5 times and that was enough for me. Since the last thing any of them wanted to do was fire a shotgun they gave me the leftover shells.:rockOn:

So, the next week I head to the range with my shotgun and these ridiculous shells. I did my routine practice with the shotgun and Glock and started to pack up when I realized I had put 30 shells of Magnum buck through the gun and hadn't really paid attention to the recoil. My shoulder felt less bruised than it had after only 5 shots with my brother's shotgun. Both of our shotguns are identical models. The only difference... that $40 Limbsaver recoil pad.

Limbsaver recoil pads: increasing my levels of lead exposure for 10 years and running! I wish I owned the company.

I have put 2 on my 2 3/4" guns, SA and doubles and it is
like shooting a light load 20 ga.
They are a bit harder it install than the usall pad as they are
so soft , it is a lot harder to grind them properly.
 
Hell No, I had a Limb saver custom fitter to an AR collapsable stock for my Moss 500, and I even put one of my Spec Ops equipped Remmy 870 (yes Spec Ops + Limbsaver) needless to say, its my Favorite, I can shoot Magnum SLUGS ALL day, and not even sore :)

Call me what ever u want, i shoot for fun and for personal enjoyment, not to be a masachist.
 
Even though a lot of tough guys like to say that they don't need a recoil pad most people still feel (and dislike) recoil. I'm 6'5" and 250lbs. I can shoot birdshot all day and putting 10 rounds of buck and slugs down the barrel doesn't really bother me.

But limbsavers are freaking awesome. My brothers Tikka T3 Lite wasn't very enjoyable for him until I suggested the limbsaver.
 
I personally don't find the 3" slugs or buckshot that bad (my gun is gas operated though). The 3.5" 2 1/4 oz federal turkey loads are PAINFUL.
 
Limbsaver slip on recoil pad, an awesome piece of kit.

My example is a 1970 made M37 Ithaca Featherweight in 20 gauge.
I also have a 20 inch fully rifled slug barrel for it, that I can mount or remove at will.
It is very accurate with Winchester Supreme Gold Partition sabot slugs (260 grain .452 calibre bullet @1900 fps!)

Not without the Limbsaver though.......

Well, good on ya for that. You are lucky to tolerate recoil well. Personally I spent too many years using a rotary hammer and jackhammer in the cold to subject my body to any more pounding than necessary!

were they remington magnum shells by any chance?


i bought some of those at bass pro and they had the most recoil ive ever seen.... the magnum slugs were the same way!....:eek:

at the range once some military guys were shooting and a guy loaded his pistol grip 12 ga with winchester slugs and 1 remington slug....he fired the first 3 winchesters no problem and when the remington magnum slug went off he wasent expecting the recoil and it kicked hard enough the knock his hand back into his stomach!

i dont know why they have more recoil the velocity isisnt much differnt....
 
I don't have much problem with the recoil of a 3 inch slug out of my Maverick with the stock recoil pad. Now 50 shells I have never done with anything other than birdshot but I would think that might get to me. The maverick and 500 are really light shotguns and this may be part of the reason. When i bring my GF to the range I always bring a slip on recoil pad for her, but one thing I found helped alot was just adding about a pound and a half of lead shot in the but stock. The added weight helped alot when I first started shooting, however after considering the weight difference I have since removed it, but if I was planning on shooting slugs all day I'd put it back.
