Hey Everyone,

I'm looking at possibly getting a new rifle in the new year but I was wondering what caliber I should get? My dad is always telling me to buy a caliber that we don't have but you can only have so many calibers that meets your needs. We hunt moose, deer and I'd like to try bear, elk and caribou. Our farthest shot at moose might be about 300 yards (I'll prob never shoot that far but still) Here are the calibers that we already have.

- 30-30 - 308 - 300 Win Mag
- 303 - 30-06 - 7mm Rem Mag

Now I'm not a big guy at 6' 170lbs so I don't want something that will buck like a rented mule. I already have a Remington 700 XCR 300 Win mag and I would like to get the Browning BAR Safari in 30-06 because of the versatility of the round but my dad already has a Remington Model Four in that caliber.

Need some help here guys!!

PS - I don't reload so ammo cost and availability matter

6.5x55 Swedish Mauser
260 remington
270 Winchester
7x57 mauser
280 remington
300 H&H
8mm mauser
338 winchester magnum
35 whelan
375 H&H

Enough?

The Browning BAR Safari 30-06 will cover all your needs 150 gr power points for the deer 180 gr for the moose .

Add to that the reduction in recoil about 40% less ( feels like a shove rather than a sharp kick ) so even if you have a bolt in 30-06 that does not preclude you buying the semi .

the lack in recoil will help with any flinch you may have ...since you are not anticipating a sharp recoil ...you can concentrate better at gently sqeezing the trigger .

AND you have a rapid follow up shot IF needed , or a chance at a second Kill .

Super accurate out of the box for a hunting Rifle .

270 is a really nice all around, flat shooting caliber that doesn't buck like a 30-06 but still has some "oopff" to it. Does whatever you need it to and is slightly cheaper than 30 cals too.

I recently shot a deer with a 300 WSM and was very impressed with its hitting power and lack of recoil. It still does buck but not up as much as 300 Win Mag does that's for sure, and you only lose 2% velocity from what I've read about it.

A couple of more options to think about.

I remain a huge fan of th 7x57, even though it seems to have fallen from grace. You can put 175 grain bullets through it which are very lethal on moose, or put 120 grain bullet through it if you want high velocity.

The Browning Bar Safari in 270 (my favorite) will cover everything from coyotes to elk, just use the 300 on Moose. Some people use a 270 on moose but you never hear of any 1 shot kills.
