Well, central Ontario finally thawed out enough for us to get into the camp to get our 9 month old Vizsla back on some birds. He hasnt been on a bird since November last year. He DID NOT disappoint. Worked the wind like a champ and when he got that scent *BAM* onto point.

We used Japanese coturnix as our supplier didnt have chukar in yet. Lousy things dont fly, but whatever, they did the trick. We were also very happy that he had not regressed in terms of gun shyness. We used the starter pistol for the first go, then upped to the .410 after. Not even a glance at the shot. Next step will be the 12g.

Anywho, some pics

Must be a pain to have to ground pound the birds for your dog but it looks like things are going well regardless! Just out of curiousity, why a Vizsla? Undoubtedly an excellent choice but what made you choose this breed over other pointer breeds like a GSP for example? Not a critique, just curious.

My wifes a vizsla nut. She had them before I came around. She has Hungarian roots, although she claims that not the reason her family started getting Vizslas.

I cant say they're a bad choice for hunting dog/family pet. Very affectionate, smart, easy to train. Shedding is negligible due to the very short hair (you dont even notice it). Get along with kids great, but let you know when someone comes around they arent used to.

Its funny, when we take our vizslas into Bass Pro or Home Depot, they always attract a lot of questions. Most people have never seen one, and ours are very well behaved.

Hunting over a properly trained bird dog is a treat. I cant wait until the fall. By the looks of things he should be ready to rip.

Our pup had that lazy pointing tail.
Every time she walks by, I smooth it up.
I just lightly clench it and as she walks by
I let it roll through my fingers and lift it.
If she is eating, I talk to her and lift her tail.
I always get in the young dogs face when they are
eating. The idea is to let them know I am not intending
to steal their food. I got bit hard as a yung'un walking past
a dog eating.
Not trying to be critical on the OP, but they look sooo much
nicer with their tail in the air.
I think that little bit of pestering paid off.
She doesn't always remember around here, but out in the bush she
sports it when she points.

Looks just like our dog, we have a five year old Vizsla. Very effectionate, very intelligent and trainable. Put in the time and you will have an excellent family pet and hunting companion.

Looks like a rusty weimaraner! Just kidding, I hunt and train weimaraners but also really like the vizslas. My long hair weim is about a week away from exploding with puppies, can't wait to see them!

Looks like you are doing a great job with your pup there, good luck with the rest of your training and I hope your efforts pay off with a successful hunting season!
