The real truth about buckshot for hunting....

I think most problems reported with Buckshot are user error, like most other complaints about this cartridge or that rifle.
Used as intended, it works as advertised.
It's not a rifle, it's not a brush buster. It's a close range broadside deer killer.
Yes, I've witnessed buckshot kill at stupid distances, and kill with just one pellet that made it through brush. But wounding while trying such stunts is a real possibility.
Nice clean broadside shot, it kills like being hit by a truck.
It doesn't require the accuracy of a rifle to do that either, not even sights in a lot of cases, just a bead on the front. (done that too)

This evening. 7 yards. Home cast 4 buck over 70 grains 2F out of a 20 gauge. Didn't go but 50 yards and both lungs were mush.

Poaching? In NS? Surely you jest!

I base this only on the number of people suggesting I just shoot the deer in the front yard.

Oh, and the oddly complete deer skeleton I found in the woods yesterday. Figured natural causes, bear, coyote, etc. Until I noticed the saw cuts on the leg bones. The bears don't have saws yet, do they? God help us if so.

I base it on the fact that any moose seen on the South Shore seems to vanish as though abducted by aliens.

I hunt a shotgun only zone and my preference is BPS 3" 28"barrel, 00/000 buck copper plated, with a IC or mod choke which ever one patterns best broadside out to 40. I have taken several deer with this over the last 10 years. 4 deer were bang flops, the furthest flop was at 30 yards. With that being said i have a 20" cylinder bore BPS that i can't trust pass 10 yards with buck so its a slug only gun. So from personal experience effective range is short 40 or less longer the barrel the better and you still have to pattern the shells being used.

Nice deer congrats and I sincerely mean that.
Just think of how boring life would be if we all agreed on everything. Enjoyed our debate elsewhere
take care
