I bought this gun as it sits but with a 16.5” Remington barrel and muzzle brake from the used rack of a cgn sponsor business.

The 16.5” barrel didn’t interest me but I had a NOS Remington 40X 7.62 NATO 27.25” stainless barrel which did. So I had Henry Rempel cut it to 24”, screw it on, headspace and re-bed it. Turned out great. Shoots just as good. Just thought I’d share the finished project.

I have four 1970's model 40x Remington repeater 's in McMillan stocks that look like that one
2 in 7.62 and 2 in 223 barrels are standard length Remington custom shop
Took almost two year's to get 8 of them 4 repeaters 4 single shots

That's a good looking rifle. Back in the 80's I was friends with a couple of hard core LR varminters who were big on CHeetahs, and liked the 40x solid bottom receivers for accuracy reasons. They bought a couple of 7.62/308's and I got the barrels. Very accurate barrels. I just mounted the last one a few months back. I like 40x rifles, have had a half dozen or so over the years. - dan

Thanks Dan.
I’ve got one more 40x barrel, a blued 30/06 version. Patiently waiting for an idea to show up.
The contour is a bit larger then a Rem varmint contour and likely contributes to the accuracy.

The 30-06 doesn't get the credit it deserves as an accurate cartridge. I've owned many, built a few, and loaded for mine and a few friends. Right now I'm playing with an RCBS Improved version, varmint weight 26" barrel. Really works well with 190 gr bullets, so far. Have a 30 Gibbs (which is a very improved 30-06, basically) as well. Sold my 30-06 Ackley to Abe a while back, that was a shooter too. It really is a great, accurate, all around cartridge.- dan
