The now prohibited , but previously non restricted Mini 14 will be around for many more years in Canada as the govt. has no idea who owns one , or where they might be . I suspect most will disappear into the nether world , and re-emerge at a later time .
 
I read a great report a while back. After the major mini 14 incident an investigation was launched into how many mini 14 were in Canada. I think it was 78 they were first imported. In 76 or 74 there was a registration I can’t remember if it was individual registration or importation registry. All paperwork had been filed with the rcmp to account for every mini 14 in Canada. The investigation was getting the run around from the rcmp. Eventually the hirer ups met with the rcmp brass. They were told the rcmp didn’t have time to deal with all the paperwork so it was never filled. When the investor offered to go threw the paperwork he was told it had all be shredded. Rcmp didn’t want to have a pile of unfinished paperwork laying around. Didn’t want someone to tell them to get on it so it was all distroyed. I will do some googling tonight. It was a gentalman in charge of the polytechnic shooting investigation I watched a couple videos with him in it. Read a couple of his reports. Anyone have a name ? I can’t rember
 
Shame, I've owned a few. Never really appreciated the platform as much as I should have. To be fair : the earlier ones were not very accurate compared to more recent production which soured my opinion. Almost bought another before the OIC.

Out where I live they're everywhere. One hanging in neighbours barn for coyote control. He didn't know and doesn't care about prohibs. Said it's all he's got. Elsewhere, they're still behind many farm kitchen doors. When someone at Ruger decided to market a "ranch rifle" it was genius.

It wasn't just import paperwork - for those of us poor schleps that slavishly waited for our green slips to arrive, for restricteds, you'll be happy to know that the fine folks in Ottawa were also shredding their copies of the registration slips. That's right, the only copy of the registration slip in existence was the one in your pistol case, that's why everyone had to re-register restricteds when the RPAL/registry came in - no one knew you had a pistol, so they had to build a database ASAP. They started out keeping paper records, but after a while there was too much paper, so when they sent out the green slip, the rest got dropped in a shredder.
I believe that the report you're referring to was the Coroner's Inquest report, I haven't read it in a while - it concluded that it didn't matter what kind of gun Gamil Gharbi used, since he had time to continue and ammo left in his pockets when he killed himself. The police never tried to enter the building and basically, he ran out of potential victims before they entered. You see a lot about guns with the grave dancing crowd, and very little indeed about faulty police response.

I was told that many Inuit people prefer a stainless mini 14 for seal hunting.....anyone have 1st hand knowledge on that? They were I think the very 1st commonly available stainless long gun so that may have been where this story originated

i do not know about iniuit but many are using it or were using it from the demspter for caribou and there is many trappers here using sks, vz/cz and now the t81. those people are not on cgn and not aware of the prohib rules for some.
