The Savage 111FCNS as an all around deer and elk rifle

I've been thinking about buying an all around rifle for deer and elk. It'll be used for Whitetails, Mulies and Elk between Saskatchewan and the Rockies. I've been looking at the Savage 111FCNS and the Remington 700 BDL Stainless, both in .30-06. I'll be building my own handloads for the rifle. I'm torn between the Savage and the Remington. I've read the reviews and have a friend who really likes his Savage. But I'm also familiar with the Remington 700. Price wise they are pretty much equal. Is there anything else I should bring into consideration?
 
Tikka T-3s have become very popular lately. They are one of the more accurate out of the box rifles available on the market these days in the same price range.
 
They both feel really good. I like the detachable mag option on the Savage, and the accutrigger. I'm also very familiar with the Remington 700 action,and I like it. I haven't tried the Tikka yet, but I should look at it a little harder, it does deserve that.
 
The Remington has a better looking bolt action in my opinion. The Savage bolt looks long and kind of peculiar compared to most other modern bolts. Otherwise, take your pick.

I prefer the model 70 and Ruger 77 for their looks. They're all great guns really. I think it's more a question of personal taste and dollars more than anything.
 
I,ve owned both, because they made Left handed rifles , The new Savage accu trigger sounds OK, But I ended up with Remington BDL,s in .270 , 30-06 and 7mm mag simpliy because they were the only left handed rifles advailable at that time .
that being said I now have a Tikka T3 Stainless left hand in .223rem. and love it !!
If possible try out the savage and a Rem. and see which you like - fit / cost / looks all enter into your choice / IN THE END YOU ONLY HAVE TO PLEASE ONE PERSON = YOURSELF

I am using a leftie stainless Ruger 77mkII and now that I have shot it a bit it is starting to slick up. A leftie Remmie was quoted to me for $400 more for a blued steel rifle. Accurate and known for its reliability. Thats enough for me. The Remmies are pretty but for what I am using it for the Ruger is filling all my needs and is not an ugly rifle. Whats more is the Ruger was easy to get in a ss leftie. I did not want to wait 2 years for my rifle. Getting too old for that kind of crap.

A Friend of mine just bought a Leftie Savage 270 and is very happy with it. It shot dead on right out the box and the recoil pad that comes stock was alot easier on his shoulder.
From what I understand Savage since the 1900's has been cutting its blanks all the same way eliminating burrs and other problems... I just picked up the same but 243 and I like it.
 
I can't speak about Savage as I have no experience.

I owned a Remington which was supposed to have a free floated barrel. I had to free float it myself. I also learned to live with the trigger. Remington’s workmanship has been poor and one has to be a handyman to like it. No wonder there are so many aftermarket parts and service for it.

You need more than just hand loading skills to be a happy Remmy owner. LOL

I have a Savage 111 in .270 win. I find it a very practical & accurate rifle. Sub MOA if I do my part. I handload all my own ammo, & use Barnes 130gr TSX bullets for all my hunting loads. I have taken 3 whitetails with it so far, & all have been bangflops.
My shooting buddy is a Remington guy, & none of his Remington's are as accurate as the Savage. I like Savage & say why buy less gun for more $$$'s.
 
i have a savage in 7mmwsm and a 338 in tikka dontreally like the remingtons but sure i will own one sooner or later,really like the savage and the tikka both shoot really well for me.i just use factory ammo so far and i am really pleased with them both.
