This 400$ stainless Savage Axis in 223 Rem is a new addition. A 9 twist if that matters. A nice filipino Bushnell 6-18 AO sits on it. Budget gun. I cut a few coils off the trigger spring to get it to just under 4#. Then hit the range.
Factory Fiocchi 40 gr VMax into 0.4". The Fiocchi 50 gr VMax into just a hair over 0.2". 3 shots groups at 100 yards.
I also shot my custom barreled 222 rem handloads through my Sako while I was there.
Which gun shot better? No comment...

People can say what they want about the cheap axis but they are very accurate.

I also have one in .223 and it loves Federal 50 round box of 50gr JHP, three shots can be covered with a dime.

My biggest complaint about the axis is the magazine, they suck to put it plainly.

Loading the mag was a bit of a new experience but it fed well and the gun was smooth to operate, extracted and ejected wonderfully.

I've got a Stainless Axis 7-08 pillar bedded into a Boyd's nutmeg laminate with a timney trigger, shoots 140 TSX's and Berger 140 VLD's very good.
Got the gun on sale for 300.00, the stock used for 100.00, and the trigger for 170.00... very pleased with it for 570.00 total cost. :)

I have a few as test guns/ loaners. I had 3 223 axis. Love them. Surprised you went with the 40 grn bullets. I got a sweet spot for Hornady 50 grn sx personally. They have worked for years. Also played with 62gr hp for longer 300 to 400 yrd plate shooting.

Glad your having fun. Enjoy the journey.
To bad their mags suck...wish some smart 3D guy could make a printable add on lower trigger assy for AR mags. The world needs this mod..

You have excellent results for a discount gun. Keep going congrats

Hey Buckmastr:

Savage Axis rifles in the lighter calibers especially are amazing shooters. I've had a 223 and a 22-250 in stainless. The 223 had the newer style stock, and the 22-250 the older.

The 223 in particular was incredible. It consistently shot better groups than my friend and his Tikka Tactical in 223, both of us shooting handloads.

With the 1:9 twist, it would easily stabilize up to 69 gr bullets. It would shoot anything from 50 to 69gr very well. I think the best group I've ever shot with any rifle was a 0.5" 3 shot group at 200 yards. May have been a fluke, but I was very impressed.

The MCarbo trigger kits are cheap and easy (basically the same effect as you trimming the spring), and another good addition is a Weaver 1pc base. Gives a bit more flexibility for scope mounting.

The magazines are definitely hit and miss.

If you ever have ejection problems, or develop them, you can replace the extractor ball bearing with one 9/64" in diameter. It grabs the cartridge rim a bit better. Works for Axis or 110 series. Best place to get them is Amazon.

It's a pretty good feeling shooting tiny groups with a cheap budget rifle!

Good reviews thanks guys.
If I could get a nice walnut stock and get the trigger down to 2 lbs this rifle would really be hard to put down. Seriously full of value as a truck or tractor gun as it is.

Nothing wrong with Savage Axis rifles.
They are as accurate as the the nut behind the trigger.
Been shooting the camo stock 223 axis for several years now and liked it so much I sold my 22/250 axis.
My other two axis are 25/06 and a rebarrelled 308 with FTR bbl and wood furniture
All have MCarbo trigger kits.

Buck -

One other detail about the MCarbo trigger kits - the 'pro' version includes two trigger springs, one at 3.5#, the other at 2.5#.
So that gets you pretty close to what you want.

Check it out.

I forgot to mention that I reinforced the stock on my 223. The earlier models had a horrible flimsy Tupperware synthetic stock so I dremelled out the horizontal ribs and bedded a carbon arrow on each side with Devcon as well as the trigger guard.
This greatly improved accuracy as well. My 25-06 has the newer stock, more rigid.
I considered bedding the actions however, the recoil lug is like a Tikka t3 which is silly. They shoot awesome regardless.

Yeah the stock is mediocre at best. But seems to hold the gun good enough to shoot it well off bags. Thanks for the suggestions!

Love mine it's very accurate did the trigger spring kit although I didn't mind the factory trigger pull of over 5 pounds - it simply shoots very well and I've shot it thousands of times. Aside from the spring kit she's all factory

The Gen1 Axis stocks had way too much flex for my liking. It was so bad I could watch the reticle drop on target as I squeezed the trigger. She’s solid now!
Newer Axis II XP stocks are ten x better.
