The search for club membership near the GTA. What's your experience?

Hi everyone,

Like so many, I'm a new firearms owner who's spent the past two years building up my knowledge and kit for long-range precision rifle (eventually). There's so much to be done before others who know what they're actually doing call me "proficient": learning the fundamentals, bore-sighting, learning wind, hand loading/load development, tall target test for scope tracking, etc.

I'm now ready to begin looking for range memberships. First time doing this and I am not well-connected to the shooting community. I've read so much online about how club memberships work, the importance of visiting the ranges where you can before applying and meeting people there, which are near the GTA, which are "good", which are "bad", etc.

But I'm really curious about what I should expect in terms of timelines and even my success rate of getting accepted.

Right now, I've put in an application to Orono Fish and Hunt Club, which really appealed to me. I am waiting for the next orientation session at the East Elgin Shooting Association to open (the facilities and people look great there). I am considering Silverdale (really undecided about this one). And, finally, I've had my eye on the ORA at Base Borden for some time now. (I don't know if the ORA is the best choice for new shooters that need to learn the fundamentals, or whether it's better to already be proficient enough to participate in a discipline. I'm still waiting to hear back from them (I did the Intro Day last year and it was so much fun). The caliber restrictions on the ranges might be an issue for me too.)

All this is to ask, for all you newer shooters in a similar position as me - or who have recently joined a club - what's been your experience throughout the process? How long did you wait until you were accepted? How many ranges did you look at, visit, apply to? Is it totally unreasonable for me to expect to hear back from a range within the same year as applying?

Thanks for all your help!

The 2026 calendar is not published yet, but the Operational Shooting Association (osacanada.ca) will be holding two clinics that might be of interest to you. 13-17 July, Enhanced Long Range Rifle Course, and 10-14 August, Wind Reading Course. Professional instruction, not inexpensive. There will be precision rifle matches during the season as well. It is not necessary to be a member in order to participate. The facility is located between Kinmount and Minden.

Hi Tiriaq,

This is such a coincidence. I just discovered the OSA website this morning as I was getting ready for work. It looks like a fantastic range with some top-tier talent.

I appreciate you sending the dates for these clinics. Thank you. I'll take a closer look at this tonight and see if it's possible for me to attend this summer.

As an aside, I've mounted my scope, found my eye relief, and adjusted my chassis literally only a couple weeks ago. Haven't even bore-sighted yet. That's where I am at the moment, lol.

Orono is a great club, I was a memeber for years. When I left a couple years ago they were working on a 200m range but I'm not sure if it's open yet.

The people at Orono are fantastic and very welcoming to new shooters. Access to the 407 has made the trip from anywhere west of the club MUCH easier.

I know there used to be a waiting list, but I'm not sure of the timeline for becoming a member. Last I heard it was years, not months.

I can only assume from your nickname that you're a Tool fan, so best of luck to you and safe shooting.

Sure am. What I didn't know was that MJK was a Nightforce fanboy. Lol.

Thanks, Keller. This is really good intel. Their website still mentions new ranges in the works, so likely not yet complete. We'll see.

Darn. Sounds like I might need a back-up plan for this season either way, which is fine. There's always range time rentals at Silverdale.

Good luck wherever you go, there are good clubs out there.

But for heaven's sake do not go to the GRGC Guelph Rod and Gun Club, this was a great club, but is now infested by incompetent and disgusting RANGE NAZIS!

Update. The East Elgin Sportsmens Association just opened up their orientation for April! Looks like I secured a slot. (This is about as far as I'd like to travel out of the GTA for this hobby.)

If anyone else from the Toronto/GTA area decides to put their hat in for their April orientation, holler. It would be great to start making some face-to-face contacts in this community!

Side note: I got waitlisted at Silverdale until Jan 2027 after putting in an application last week.

Good luck everyone!
