The silver plating remaining on the brass backstrap of this M1849 Colt Revolver.

Very rare to find the silver remaining! Seems was a very thin wash applied which easily wore off with carry use. Any I have had showed only traces inside the trigger guard .

London Colts have iron trigger guards and backstraps. No, that isn't silver plating on your London Colt 1849, they were fully blued originaly and the receiver was cased.

It seems that the pre-Civil War M1849 Colts had a more robust silver plating than the later production.

Here is one, made in 1858, that was carried and used, and has just about all the silver plate left on the trigger guard and backstrap.
