Sort of a combination “what’s it worth?” and “what should I do with it?” thread around one of the former Sirius Sled Patrol M1917 rifles with the deleted rear sights.

They have come up on CGN before but there wasn’t much discussion.

I bought the rifle as part of a good sized collection a few months ago and don’t know anything more than the rear sights are gone and that it was like done post service by a reseller who wanted to make the rifle easier for Danish hunters. (I know there’s some GOOGLE saying otherwise but all the pics I could find have intact sights and none of the Danish sources mention removing anything)

The rifle is a Winchester, has the machined relief for the heavier/longer Bear Defense Round, an absolutely brilliant VAR stamped barrel with the dovetailed replacement sight and a stock that’s been used just enough to give it the character you would expect from a hundred year old rifle.

What’s it worth?

And is it ok to finish the job the Kgl. Grønlandske Handel (Royal Greenland Trading Company) started and clean up the receiver for a scope mount?

Either way, interested in an opinion or two.

Previously referenced article for fun; http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/08/03/the-gevaer-m53-17better-known-as-the-m1917/

A very nice IMGUR post, 3rd pic in the series clearly showing an unmodified M1917 in the field; https://imgur.com/a/wBdWZ

And of course, our own Riflechair's youtube video is fun to watch; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mc8iZV7P28

Just got one off the E&E for $550 shipped; may I ask if the rear-sight portion of the receiver has been "ground-flat" on yours?

Because someone already (poorly) drilled positions for scope mounts into my rifle's receiver, I'm looking to finish the job and get the receiver drilled & tapped correctly.

Mine is also ground flat. Too bad, great shooter. I’ve thought about having it cleaned up for Remington model 30 mounts would make a neat full wood faux sniper ;)

It was, guessing with a bench grinder. The barrel and dovetail indexing was done by VAR, the receivers were ground flat by the kid they hire on weekends to clean the shop.

Thanks for telling me what you paid, gives me an idea of what to ask when I move it down the road.
