I was at the range the other day and guy jumps out of his truck with his sks that he has had for years. I looked at it and asked how reliable they are so he says "these things never jam" and then he loaded a full stripper clip into it and got into his military stance and fired one shot. Yup, jammed her up and the case stuck in the chamber and the bolt ripped the head off the case. I heard the commie stuff was better than that but this little test was enough for me to NOT take one out where my life depends on it.:(
So instead of ripping off 100 rounds in a few minutes I had to be satisfied with the .338 and plunkin' them off one at a time.:D

Wow! Just because that one gun malfunctioned that one time, with what could have been an ammo issue, they're crap!

Based on that detailed study, every gun ever made is crap and not worth carrying. Just because of that once!

But it IS a funny story lol.

Yeah the SKS is a real jem.....I have to laugh everytime I see some loser who has installed a scope or aimpoint on one......Shamefully I own one and use it for its intended purpose.....Busting rocks and fridges

Yea that sounds like an ammo issue. I wouldn't codemn this rifle right away, especially if you've never even fired one.

PS: Jennis, I think you've gotten the "official use" of the SKS down pat ;)

I like them for what they are made for. Mine shoots minute of baddie to 200m. Can't complain.

At least not for what you pay for it lol.

3-4 MOA accuracy...limiting factors being the trigger and those damn awful sights.

But hey, that's just as accurate as a Ruger and they cost upwards of $700

Is it my first choice? No, I have a Garand, hopefully an AR soon. But for what it is, it's fine. Unless you're an elitist.

Who cares if a dude wants to scout it with a red dot and the scoutscopes mount? More power to him. If he can shoot that well, good stuff then.

Especially in a fight, ain't no one gonna be driving tacks anyway, regardless of what he is armed with.

Funny to hear you say that 'cause the other day there was a guy with .338 at the range; when he pulled the trigger, the barrel exploded. I decided right then and there that absolutelly every gun chambered in.338 was garbage and the people who owned one were pedophiles, without exceptions.

"Yeah the SKS would top my list for 1st choices for 'ruby ridge'"

What's your point?

Skippy, I wish the same. With most firefights being under 100 m I really don't see why in it's time it was a bad thing. (Outdated by 'Nam anyhow)

I have a $3000 H/K USC and a $125 SKS...wouldn't give up either of them! Besides, the SKS is the one most likely to go full auto!:p

My Chinese sks works fine every time. It seems like the little retaining pin that keeps the recoil spring on that little rod assembly thingy, technical I know, pops off after the first 5 or 10 rounds but once I put it back on it stays on for the rest of the range time (upwards of 300 rounds). The bolt hold open wasn't working but I attribute that to it's dirtyness.

Sure, there are little problems here and there but overall it's tremendously reliable and tuff.

In my flashbacks to The 'Nam, I remember the SKS workin' real good to chuck bullets at me and my buddies...

Of course, our accuracy kinda sucked with our Mattel-toys, as we had our faces in the dirt, and were doing the one-handed, over the berm, full-auto magazine emptying thing, so the relative inaccuracy of the SKS was pretty well compensated for.

** NOTE: This post intended in humour. No offence intended to actual veterans of the South-East Asian conflict on either side, or on any person sufferring from post-traumatic stress from combat incidents. I am not quite old enough to have actually participated in the Vietnam war, and merely wished to expostulate the idea that arguing which combat rifle is best on the range is kinda like seeing how much room is in the trunk of a Formula One race car.

As one poster mentioned above - In real combat, particularly in the short engagements that would happen in jungle canopy, the SKS was probably an excellent weapon system: Reliable as all get out, simple to operate and maintain, and ammunition that gets more or less where you want it to go, with enough energy to be dangerous.

That said - I've shot two, and my shotgun really IS more accurate - No pun intended, and I would swear to that upon any Holy Tome.

Crikey - I did go off on a rant there, didn't I? Sorry! Not enough coffee yet today!!

The fact, that SKS stayed with Soviet military for a very short time, speaks for itself. I would see it as something to fill the gap between retiring PPSH/SVT/M44 and emerging AK-47/RPK/SVD. Since AK took its spot, SKS remained almost exclusively with the guards on duty. Nam war is probably the only significant event where SKS saw the action.
