Stevens 200 Safety
.
Just what does the video prove. That any jackass can blow up a rifle?
He loaded a round into it, then pullet the trigger with a string. My question is what was loaded into the round? Were there any barrel obstructions?
If the barrel was obstructed, it will blow up.
If the fool loaded pistol powder into it, it will blow up.
If the barrel was slackened off creating excessive headspace, it will blow up.
He obviously knew what he was doing was dangerous, because he had the rifle tied down, and pulled the trigger with a string. Not exactly controlled labratory conditions! Some people will do anything to get on you tube. All he did was destroy a $350 rifle.
The Stevens 200 evolves from the Savage 110 series of rifles. These rifles have been around for over 60 years. Back about 1996, Savage was sold to another company, and the basic 110 series was updated with some improvements in receiver and trigger. It looks like Savage (under the Stevens name) used their old tooling to make the Stevens 200.
Since these rifles have been, and are still made in 7mm Remington Magnum and 300 Winchester Magnum, the action has proven itself over the last 60 years.
ANY RIFLE CAN BE BLOWN UP BY CARELESSNESS OR MISUSE OR IDIOCY.
We once took and old No.1 Mk.3 Lee Enfield that was rusted and experimented with it to blow it up, as an experiment. Now, this rifle is a lot weaker action than the Stevens 200, and we worked out several loads that were deliberately overloaded. Working with the ordinary medium range powders such as 4895, 3030, etc., the old rifle devoured everything we fed it that would fill the case in this powder range. We had to go to pistol powders to get any severe reaction. As we worked upward in charge weight, we finally blew off the extractor, and had a hard time closing the bolt. Finally we did blow it up with a large charge of Bullseye pistol powder, but not as violent as that reaction on youtube. It bowed the action, but the bolt was still in it.
Now, I don't know how long you have been shooting, but I am 67 years old, was qualified on anything from a .22 to 105 mm howitzer, and have been shooting for about 55 of those 67 years of my life. I have reloaded ammunition since I was about 15 years old, I have a metal lathe and metal shaper, a 2000 foot shop, am a Certified Welder, and amateur gunsmith.
What are your qualifications to pronounce a judgement that the Stevens 200 should be banned as unsafe?
Perhaps we should get some videos of that clown slipping in the bathtub, and pronounce bathtubs as unsafe. Or maybe he was watching "Jackass -the movie" and wanted to become a movie star.
ANYTHING IS UNSAFE IF USED IMPROPERLY.
