just wondering what your thoughts of predator hunting is i've been getting a since that many people think its taboo even hunters i love hunting bobcat and fox and would love to go bag a bear or cougar one day but when people see my pelts and trophy there always giving me a bad look

PS anyone subscribe to predator extreme?

in an effort to extend my time out in the woods, I've actually decided to take up predator and varmint hunting, screw the taboo. A deer is cuter than a coyote so it should be worse to shoot a deer, but I guess a fox is quite nice to look at so maybe we just shouldn't kill the really cute animals. Seriously this season will be my first for anything other than standard big game, why not, dang coyotes are everywhere.

Well, bear and cougar are quite edible, so should be no issues there.

As far as the fox and coyotes are concerned, you are only helping to reduce there numbers as they can be a nuissance in some cases. You can likely eat them too.... but i don't know of anyone who has.

I get Predator Extreme. Decent magazine. I don't think predator hunting is any more taboo than any other kind of hunting these days, but I suppose the "fear of fur" would add to the disdain from the anti's. Same old, so keep on whacking em and stacking em.

I was asked by two local farmers to get out and try and kill afew coyotes on their properties just this week. One guy(dairy farmer) has lost two calves and the other afew lambs/sheep.
As much as I dont like killing them this time of year,I went out Tuesday afternoon and took one off the dairy farmers property.
In some places their population is really getting out of hand.
I dont believe it's "Taboo"

Taboo? Hardly.

Here it's more like de rigeur :)

You can set up your calendar by the seasons: "Coyote season" is what is found between "deer, moose and elk season" and "spring bear" season. That is followed by "gopher season" which ends in load testing for "deer, moose and elk season", etc., etc. :D

must be the difference between living in the city and the country. in the rural area i live in, people are happy if you tell them you shot a coyote, and if someone gets a wolf, people stop by to see it.

You must be one of my neighbours ;) About the only time we don't really want to shoot coyotes is while they are raising their pups. But come mid-August and frosty nights, the .223 gets dusted off again.

Never had a problem yet with anyone being down on predator hunting yet but i'm sure it will come. Whe the time comes they will get the same reply a s the rest.

If you dont like trapping/hunting/fishing/shooting thats fine. But if you try to oppose me enjoying them you are welcome to piss of and go f**k yourself with a rusty pipe.

True bigdawg, they are a bunch of hippie tree huging yo-yo's, I hate the ones who move out to the country. You guys know the type, its the ones who drive VW's and buy up prime hunting land but dont want anyone to hunt it.
But as soon as there foo-foo dog or cat get eaten or they hit a deer with the car, they cry bloody murder. F'EM

Yes there is a taboo on killing predators especially the big ones, the new Bambi. Not for me but it is out there. A guy at work told me he thought it was wrong to kill bear especially grizzlies I told him that if he was getting chewed on buy a bear i'd make sure no one shot the bear off of him because he thinks it is wrong.

Oddly he did not respond to that comment.

Showing him studies on how removing adult male bears from the population helps cub survival there by increasing over all population, did not help.

Funny how science does not seem to help clear things up for some people.

only people that have any?? are people ignorant to the facts. I had a lot of people showing intrest on a cruise I was on. When explained first hand, cost to farmers, game management, and lost pets, most were understanding. (i wasn't the one to bring up the subject) Like anything else,a reasonable health pop.is good.

It may be a taboo closer to cities and, as was previously mentioned, by tree-hugging city-slickers owning undeveloped land. No issues up north - they harvest a number of different predators. I'm looking forward to harvesting my first wolf - their fur make warm mitts and great parka ruffs.:D

They probably have a problem with predator hunting because there is the idea that the animal is shot, skinned, and tossed. Personally, I disagree with hunters that don't eat what they kill either, since it's one thing to kill an animal, but another to throw it away after you have a little memento of it. Especially when there are starving university students who would gladly eat it:p

I've never tried varmint/predator hunting yet, but I want to take it up this year. Going to get me either a 223 or 243. I was under the assumption that you just shoot the yote and leave it there, maybe take the fur or the tail, unless you want to mount. I was always told that it's ok to just leave it because the other yotes would eat it quickly anyway. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.
