Maybe this ought to have gone into the "Optics" section, but to me this is milsurp-specific....:yingyang:

In the case of a "bubba'ed" or sporterized miltsurp that does not readily lend itself to receiver-scope-mounting (e.g. "split-bridge") or to restoration (i.e. rear sight wholly removed by some heartless bast@rd), has anyone had any experience using a "barrel-clamp" scope mount?

Personally, I hesitate at the notion of mucking-about with the barrel of any firearm: weight considerations, barrel harmonics, and just general concerns about "squeezing the barrel"; as such, any comment/guidance would be much appreciated!

I have used a barrel clamp scope mount if it could be called that.

More than one type actually. One came out of France and was intended for use on a split bridge Mauser. It actually had two clamps which were machined to the profile of the barrel and it was intended to be clamped by tightening the screws on the bottom until it was tight. They also suggestd using lacquer such as clear nail polish or mixable epoxy to ensure they stayed in place an in the instructions stated that sweating them in position with solder would be best. They only suggested the sweating for heavy recoiling cartridges.

The other wasn't intended to be permanent and was only suitable for 22rf rifles.

SKB offers a couple of types of clamp on scope bases as well.

One thing about both of the bases I mentioned above. The stocks had to be permanently altered to allow the rings to clear.

If you can possibly avoid them, do so.

When I run across such a rifle now and it's owner insists it has to be scoped, usually because of aging eyes, I D&T the receiver ring as well as a close enough point on the barrel to mount scope bases. Usually the barrel mounted base has to be modified to adapt to the contour at that point.
