This seems a little too good to be true. I have heard good things about Remington, and a gun/scope combo out of the box for $300 seems ideal for my first hunting rifle.

What do people think about this unit?

Savage Axis is probably a more accurate better deal, but every one has there own opinion. go to a gun store and fondle the merchandise, try not to drool.

My new favourite rifle is a savage 114 Canadian classic(my name) with stainless steel and a wood stock but double the price, for tripple the rifle.

Probably the most over all cost effective rifle is a Thompson Center Fire Encore Pro Hunter action with interchangable barrels. About 700 for a good deal and then just buy different barrels for new and different calibres for less than 400

Even if it works fine you would have a hard time selling it later.

Buy the Savage package. They are around $415.

If you want a budget rifle i would look at the stevens 200, its just a savage without the accu-trigger and a "i can't belive its not tupperware" stock but unlike the axis or 770 you can change the stock, you can get triggers for them and i think savage barrels fit them aswell (i may be wrong on the barrel thing, but i'm sure someone here can correct that) they come in various calibers, both long and short action, there worth a look!
