If you are ever in San Jose, just south of San Francisco, California, visit the "Winchester Mystery House", continuesly build by Sarah Winchester for 38 years, a Winchester widow, who had $ 30 million, plus an income of $ 1000.- a day, back in the days when a daily income of $ 2.- was respectable :)

Visit www.winchestermysteryhouse.com and experince how money earned from selling guns, was also used.

When I was about 11 or 12 we were down at Disney for Christmas. We had supper one night at the Western Speghetti House or station(?) The place had more glass cabinets full of 94's and others I imagine than tables. The restaraunt owner must have been a nut!
It was an excellent experience for me, even better than Disney!
I don't know if it is still there as that was 20 years ago. Well worth looking up if you go down!

The gun room had all the guns the Winchester Company ever produced, which are mostly of Henry, Browning and Mauser firearms designs.

I also learned that there was an aggreement between Winchester and Colt, that spelled out that Winchester would only produce long arms, and Colt only handguns.

Winchester also used to produced all kinds of hand tools, slot machines, roller and ice skates, which are also exibited at the "Winchester Mystery House".

Sarah Winchester was a nut case who was convinced that she would be haunted by the "ghosts" of everyone who had ever been shot with a Winchester rifle, and thought that the way to appease those "ghosts" would be to continue building on this house.

That would explain staircases that went nowhere, doors that opens to walls etc etc.

From the Winchester Mystery House Estate Guide: "Every Halloween, the Winchester Mystery House is open for unique Flaslight Tours. Special entertainment and complimentary "Trick or Treating" in the gardens provide spirited fun for the whole family".

Also, there is special "Friday the 13th Evening Flaslight Tours" :)

Winchester Mystery House

Is in San Jose, California. Been there many times. Former in-laws lived there so spent many a month [usually May] in the Bay area. Very cool display of Winchesters & other firearms in the museum there. House tour is interesting, too.

I always wondered why Colt never came out with Cowboy rifles to accompany their pistols. (and vice versa with Win revolvers!)
Good to know:popCorn:

The story told in Wilson's Winchester book is that Winchester was starting to lose sales to the Burgess lever-action rifle built by Colt, so they made several prototype revolvers that would've competed with Colt's, and took them to Colt's manager to show them off. They "came to an understanding" regarding lever-actions, but Colt still produced lots of Lightning pump-action rifles after that.

Have you seen the movie '23'?

Other than the gun room,it wasn't worth the trip, $25+ USD a person was a rip off. You have to pay more to go into the basement.

Always bring lots of cash when traveling in California. From a point of being a gunnutz, it was interesting to have a rare chance to observe, first hand, of how huge sum of money earned from manufacturing and selling firearms was being spend, in a way that it has left a historical trail behind for us to wonder, about the sanity of Sarah Winchester ?

However, Winchester Mystery House will be with us for a long time to come as an oddity to our firearms heritage, and well worth a visit :)

kell2784, what is the movie "23" about ? I will try to look for it.

Really nothing to do with firearms or Winchester. It's a little off topic, but it's a new movie about how the #23 re-occurs everywhere in life. It came to mind wth NAA's post of the #13.
