Theme is 308 to a mile! Feb 18 2012

Well another awesome shoot complete. Met some new friends, re-aquainted with some old friends. Great weather. LIG

Good news, a 308 will reach a mile. I know because I didn't beat around the bush, I went right after the mile target. I had incentive Stevesummit was offering a bottle to the first to hit the one mile target with a 308. Couldn't see any marks on the target from the shooting line. So I called a cease fire and went to paint targets and check my progress. This is what I saw and I was the only one shooting at the 1 mile target at the time. 11 hits

And this is what I found on the ground in front of the target. Nosler CC 155gr jackets

5 people hit the mile target today, 3 - 308s, 1 6.5-284 and the 338 win mag came through again. Good times. Here are some more targets. 2nd trip down to the target.

3rd trip down to the target.

Some of the hits show that the bullet was sideways. Some 338s skipped into the target and laid in front of it, after bouncing off the yellow gong!!
Thanks guys for coming, I hope you had as much fun as I did. Thanks steve the White Owl Whiskey taste good! Kinda spicey.

Hey it doesn't matter how the bullet came into contact with the yellow gong all that matters is that I hit it. Lol. Thanks again can't wait for next time. Maybe sooner than sept????

A long trip. But, with good weather, great coaching, some top notch equipment, and what do you know, even the "rookie" gets on the steel at 1 mile. w:h:
MY GOD, does that plate look tiny even with the scope. Thanks to stevesummit for all the "coaching" and to tigrr for hosting the event.

df1eye.

Never thought of shooting one of my 308 at one mile but now since i saw the difference with all my other 308, i think i could do it with my Nemesis 308 and could get there with my backpack on my motorcycle, looking forward to know when that event will be held... JP.

looking at your sig line you need to change it cause thats not true anymore

I think it took 150 - 160 MOA to get the 308 3050fps 155gr bullet to the mile. 2MOA of wind at a mile. LIG
30 in base shims, 20 in the Burris Z rings inserts and 100 in the nightforce scope.
It might be less but my front base came loose. Loose enough that I can see daylight under it. I didn't know hot 308 rounds could do that!!

Can you hear the plate ring at that range, even a little bit? Any other indications that you hit it without driving down constantly? (Are your optics good enough?)

At MILCUN there is a 24" steel plate at a 1000m range on the way into the shoter "conventional" ranges with firing mounds and target butts. We wear electronic ears, and it's neat to hear the echos of the shot going down the valley on the way to the plate - and it usually makes a distinct ring if you get it good. Trouble is that hits in the middle or the top half of the plate make a dull sort of ring, and hits in the bottom half make a nice clear (and louder) ring. The plate is a sandwich sort of thing, welded at the top so it can vibrate and resonate for this reason - but it's not always clear if the "thump" that you hear is the plate being hit in the top, or if you slapped one into the rocks behind it... And if there's much wind (Most of the time) the sound of the plate might not make it back at all. We hammered away with 20 rounds once, fiddling with the wind and not getting much feedback. We could see a few of the fresh hits in the paint, but not well through the heat. When we finally drove down we were able to determine that we were hitting it "most" of the time, and the misses were probably because of fiddling around with the shots we "thought" were going high..

Curious if your experinces at a mile are similar, or if you got better feedback from your plate somehow. (We're thinking of playing around with remote camera so we can use paper and test ammo at 1000m -- but it's getting complicated. I'm a gunnut, not a technut)

Quite often I could hear the hit at a mile. The problem is someone else sending one down shortly after shutting off the electronic muffs. I can see 300wm, 7mm, 338 and 50 cal hits with my Konusspot 20-60X80 spotting scope. I'm buying the Konusspot 20-60X100 to see if it will see 6.5 and 308 hits. Factor in mirage and it gets trickey.
Oh ya 23 new hits on the mile target!!

Tigrr; do you guys have a good guesstimate on what bullets and barrel combinations would best be suited for a 308/mile trip?

And once again, sorry I didn't make it up. Kinda afraid to drive any distance.

I would have to say that the 155 is the best of both worlds with high bc and the velocity to make the trip , I found that 1500 was easy but the last 250 yards was the killer as i needed 27.5 moa of more up . I dont think that a heavier bullet in the 308 would gain much with the loss of speed. My barrel is only 26" i would say that a 30"tube would be in order to help gain the advantage back to your favor

Max stay with the 1 in 12. The faster the twist the heavier the bullet that can be used.
If you go to a 1 in 10 or 1 in 8 you can use 210 225 grain bullets.
1 in 13 or 1 in 14 can send as light as 110 grain bullets down range. But there is a reason the 1 in 12 is so popular it works very well with the 155s.
1 in 12 with 155gr Nosler Custom Competitions, pics speak for themselves.

My favorite shooting buddy has joined my 1 mile shooting club with a 308. Shooting and hitting the target with Nosler 155gr CC's and Chinchaga 176gr & 205gr bullets. I painted the target since saturday. The three small ones are the 155s. The far left one is the 176. The middle one 205gr destablized out of a 1 in 12 and hit sideways. She shot 10 155s, 5 176s and 5 205s.
Only Tigrres shot at this target!!
Cool part was, I seen her first hit, the one on the right!! With my Konuspot spotting scope. She wouldn't celebrate till she seen it.
I love this stuff.

The sept one is open to most calibers. There will be a .223 challenge in the future. Think of a build!! (must contact Jerry and find out elevation requirments)("what" do they make a 100 MOA base?)
