Hi there,

I want to initiate myself for long range shooting.

I was asking myself some questions :

- Mil dot or MOA scope ?
- Which magnification is enough ?
- Brands that are excellent for long range?

I have a budget of 1,000$ for a scope so I was looking for Sightron's scope.

I'm new to long range and I dont want to make mistakes when buying expensive material.

I'm waiting your news.

Well moa is technically slightly more precise but mrad will be better for dialing a lot of drop quickly. But for 1000 you will not do better than sightron. Get an s3 6-24 with the moa2 reticle and you're good to go. You can look I to the 8-32 if you want but I personally think mirage gets too bad at those levels of magnification.

What do you means by mrad ? It is mil dot ?

Which scope I should considers if there was no budget limit ? S+B ?

mil-dot,mrad,mil,milradian, technically all refer to the same thing.. i wont get into technical things like, mil-dot is a type of reticle, not a unit of messurement, but all work for the same unit of measurement, 1/1000 of the distance...

MOA= minute of angle which works out to be 1.047" at 100 yards, 2.094 at 200 and so on.

both have mathematical formulas when using to range a targets distance

are you talking about calculate how much to dial to make a shot? that has nothing to do with MOA or MIL, that will be based on alot more things like, bullet weight, bullet BC, muzzle velocity, altitude density, humidity, temperature..

as for direct answers to your questions

1) personal preferance, MOA is finer adjustments, better for poking little groups at long range

2) whats the use of scope? want to shoot tiny groups, more QUALITY magnification is better, for shooting steel, a HIGH QUALITY 25X scope is more then enough for WAY out there

3)Schmidt and bender, March, nightforce, USO, luplod, sightron, and on and on we go, for your 1000 budget, sightron is probably the best you can get

trust me when I tell you to go with mils. also for your budget + $200 you can get a Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50. you can't go wrong with that scope, you will just love it and it is FFP (first focal plane).
