Thinking about a little tiny moose rifle....

So My current moose rig is a 700 LSS (stainless/grey laminate) in 300 ultramag. The gun shoots 1/2 MOA and is reliable as anything....but it's a big gun with the 26" tube on it. My hunting area has changed, and 3-500 yard shots are no longer the norm. So I'm thinking of going smaller...way smaller.
What do you think of those ruger frontiers? I'm thinking a stainless model in 300 WSM (or .350 rem...did they come in that?)
I would be using the standard scope mounts (the scout setups are fugly IMO) and recontouring the front end of the stock....any opinions?

What? Your kidding me right.....?

The 300 ultra is a powerhouse, esp. out of a 26" tube. Even the anemic factory loads are way beyond the WSM (about 400 fps), but with the big case you can hit stupid velocity #'s by reloading....where the WSM's are pretty much maxed from the factory.

Anyway, the WSM out of the fontiers 16" tube mimicks the 30/06 pretty well. Shots now will be under 300., and I'm not neccesarily looking to go smaller in "power", but in rifle size.

Yup! but I want smaller..(and stainless)...with the 24" tube there was no real advantage to the 7 over the 700....kinda duplicated eachother.

That said, I would seriously look at another 7...but in stainless and 350 rem mag with the 20" tube. Hmmm...

Id like something as light as my 7/08 that I used to shoot (when I had ammo ;) )

Under 300 yards, carbine rifle, suitable for moose, eh?

IMHO, the 350 rem will be difficult to beat. A guide gun in 45-70 or 450 will do 200 or maybe even 250 with 300/350 grainers. The 338 Federal looks pretty swank and a t3 lite is only 22".

The Ruger hawkeye 20" in 375 ruger might be another good choice. From all accounts, the 375 Ruger doesn't quite make the numbers stated, but even at 100-150fps behind the H&H, it'll get the job done with authority :D

get a M77 compact in 308 Win, and stuff it with 165 grain X bullets. You'll still be able to get them going 2500 fps or so, and inside 250 yards it'll be a hammer.

Hell, get a Marlin XLR in 444, 45/70, or 450 Marlin

You could always get one of these in 7X57, and if you wanted more, just slide in a 280AI reamer!
this carbine is 36" long, BTW.

Mine is not for sale btw!

x2 on the .444, 450 marlin, 45-70 out to 250 yds with heavy cast bullets. Difficult to find a more compact package throwing a deep penetrating and shocking pill which is very handy to shoot, cycle and carry in the bush. Beyond 300 yds a 35 whelan carbine or a 350 rem mag is hard to beat.

I really like my 7600 in.35 Whelen with a 1.5 X 5 on it my furthest shot so far was about 250yds and it put a big hole right through a nice bull elk. For more open country I like your ultra, I've got a T-3 in .338 that I'm going to try when more reach is required.
After all is said your'e still hard pressed to beat the tried and true 06, 200g bullet going 2600 will go through alot of moose out to 300yds.
