Thinking about a little tiny moose rifle....

Another fan of the 7600 in 35 Whelan, which has accounted for a number of moose & deer. Mine wears a Leupold VX II in 1x4 in QR mounts to keep everything as low as possible. I load 250 gr, Hornady round-noses for moose with RL-15 and load down for deer with Speer 220 flat points & H4831.

+1 for the Ruger M77 Compact in the .308 or 7-08. You can get the Compact in Target Grey/laminate or Blued/walnut. It is lighter(6 3/4 vs. 6(T.G.) or 5 3/4(Blued) lbs) and cheaper($900 vs. $805(T.G.) or $749(Blued) U.S.) than the Frontier. IMO the scout mounts are ugly, the Compact gets rid of that.

The only disadvantage is you can't get the Compact in .338 Federal or the .358 Winchester; however most would agree that the .308 is more than enough for moose.

If I get the frontier, it also has the "normal" mounts....I'l;l throw a 2.5-8X36 in those.

As far as the .308 goes? I have a mountain LSS in 7/08 now....and shooting the 140 TSX's I'm sure it would be fine, but I want to make bigger holes witht he next gun. Never owned larger than a .30...and I think I've owned most of 'em, so time for a .35

or .350 rem...did they come in that?)
No not in the frontier or compact. But briefly they made the stainless frontier in 325WSM but may be impossible to source one now.

How about the the new 358Win (or 338Fed) chambering in the stainless frontier being made now by Ruger? I think I want one myself. If todbartell's good suggestion of a compact/308Win would be a "hammer", so would the 358Win I think.

build a custom

shoulda kept that Model Seven 300saum, yank the tube, put on 19" chambered in 350 Rem Mag, 1.75-6x32 VXIII or 2-7x33 VXII and stuff a 225 grain TSX on top of a case full of RL15 or Varget. If you shoot factory ammo, buy a 375 H&H and lop the barrel like Geologist did.

Atta' boy! ;) I just joined the .35 club myself last year - first with a .350 Rem Mag Ruger and now with a Browning BLR in .358 Winchester.
