I picked up a Russian from my LGS for $199 about 1.5 yrs ago. I contemplated ordering online but felt the need to inspect it before purchasing to be safe. On the plus side, it was already cleaned of all the cosmoline.
For cleaning, I took the advice of an old timer who was in the store at the same time. Enjoyed a good 30 minute conversation with him and all that he recommended was to clean with G96. Told me to forget about all the hot water stuff I'll read about. I don't know why but I took his advice, maybe because it was only 199 and plenty available. Anyhow, after shooting I strip it down, soak everything with G96, scrub it clean and reassemble till the next range trip. I was also told to watch out for the "non-corrosive" ammo, that it may not all be as advertised and to treat it all as if it was corrosive and to clean after every shooting.
I inspect it regularly for any signs of rust and have found none.
