Thinking of a .223

I am looking into purchasing a .223. Not too sure as to which gun I should get. I don't want to spend a ton of money either. I am open to used rifles forsure. I'd really like an older Sako but they seldom come up for sale.

Any suggestion for new rifles?? I won't be getting a Marlin, Stevens, new Remington and probably not a ruger or savage or Tika either. And yes, I now that I already scratched off some nice rifles there.

How are the A bolts?

What are some good older models that I may want to take a look at that are used and out of production? And yes, I want accuracy.

Also, I am open to anyone that wants to convince me that the above manufacturers listed are worth a look at.

I have been thinking about getting one in the same calibre, and favour one thats not in your list of nevers. How about the weatherby vanguard, I have been reading lots of positive reviews about them and you can buy a new one for $399.

TIkka T3 lite in .223... accurate, reliable, not that pricey. You'll find some guys hate them, some love them (myself included). Trigger is AWESOME and very crisp, and removeable mags are preferrable to blind mags like a Rem 700.

Browning A-bolts... meh... I have a LH one in .300WM, and while it's accurate, I really hate the magazine setup. Floorplate AND magazine? Seriously... pick one and stick with it! They aren't cheap (the guns OR the mags), and unless you're a Browning fanboy, they don't really offer much over the other makers. Short throw bolt is 'nice', but the gun itself is nothing special.

I'd say Savage or Tikka if I was in your position.

I did own a Stevens 200 in .223, sold it because I decided that coyote hunting wasn't going to be my thing. Likes: low price, accurate, seemed reliable enough. Dislikes: ugly stock unless painted, rough edges on both plastic and metal parts.

I ended up with a tikka when I was in your posistion. I was considering a savage lightweight varmiter, cz 527 and the tikka. I liked the bolt on the tikka enough to comprimise with the plastic stock. I still like that cz 527 american though.

Cz 527, savage 10 predator, new weatherby vanguard sub moa varmint, older plain vanguard with a target. That's the order I'd be looking in if buying a "new" one. I already have an older vanguard ss .223 that came with a target, shoots sub moa all day long.

Sold my Ruger no 1 because I could not get it to shoot accurately. Used the cash to buy a new CZ527. Redesigned Minimauser action designed for the smaller cases-not just a downsized short action. I also have a CZ452 and they are identical in weight which blew me away. As usual an accurate rifle and a beautiful action. I stopped looking at other 223s at that point. I would recommend it to anyone. I was especially pleased that I could get a left handed action in only a few days. To put it plainly, that is absolutely amazing. Love my CZs and all the parts are steel. The CZ527 came with a set trigger and a set of rings to boot. One of my faves. Anybody that I allow to shoot mine wants one.

I don't have the post count to be really credible but grew up in a weatherby household and can vouch for the vanguard being sub moa all day. Ours is a varminter with a 1:12 barrel and shoots 55gr Vmax factory loads very close to, if not .5 moa.

Just picked up a CZ 1 in 9 twist. Nice set trigger and the laminated stock looks great. There is a bit of "creep" with the trigger if used normaly, but the ste trigger is very nice and crisp. All mettal as previously mentioned. Notice that I do need a rail for mounting my scope a bit further forward for eye relief. Very happy with it so far.

Mine had the same issue, but it was easy to adjust out the creep.

I had Clay at Prophet River bring in a CZ rail for me.

You won`t go to far wrong if your looking at a Sako but like you say they don`t show up to often, be prepared to jump on one if it comes up or put a wanted ad on the EE. I guess it boils down to personal preferences, nothing wrong with the CZ or Tikka`s either. Kind of comes down to do i want it now or can i wait for that particular rifle.

I think I'll be playing the waiting game for now. Eventually, one will come up. If I see a nice push feed M70 I'd probably look at that too. I don't mind buying used guns at all, especially for the price and quality you get compared to new.

Ruger M77 MII .223 stainless with synthetic stock ... lightweight, all weather ... can't go wrong in my opinion.

cz 527

Just bought a Cz 527 varmint in 223, extremely accurate out of the box and the set trigger is amazing *BUT* I am having some problems with the bolt getting hung up while cycling and rounds that don't want to come out of the mag very nicely, and researching it now alot of other people have the same problem, if you get a cz I'd say cycle some rounds through it before taking it home
