Thinking of a Kimber 1911, looking for some feedback..

I would stay away from Kimber. I feel Kimbers are a gamble and there's plenty of other manufacturers out there that put out great guns for the amount your looking to spend or less. I'd look hard at Springfield Armory, Colt, Smith&Wesson and STI, not in any particular order. Personnaly, I love my STI Ranger II and can't wait to get my Colt GI commander stainless.

I'm also looking at an SVI but that carries a different price tag

Gawd. Talk about bad luck with Kimbers.... I own several Kimbers and I love each and every one of them. They have ALL had problems. Every single one of them. And every single problem had been attributed to lousy magazines. The moment I went to the ProTac magazines my feed problems disappeared completely. Ditto any of the other QUALITY magazines that I have bought. I simply took all of the cruddy magazines and dumped them in the wastebasket. Done. I wouldn't think about selling them on here or anywhere to a fellow shooter... life's just too short to even think about that.

If you are having a problem with your Kimber in the area of FTF/FTE etc., almost assuredly it is the magazine. Do yourself a favour and get yourself some top quality magazines and watch your problems disappear! Also I keep my Kimbers as clean as a whistle and well lubed with top quality lube. I happen to be partial to Gun Butter (hard to find these days). And I am partial to Kimber's external extractors contrary to common feeling. I love the spring loaded job they do and have never had a FTE on any of my Kimbers with external extractors.... unless it was to do with FTF and a cheap magazine. I have a Target II SS, Custom II SS, TLE II/RLII SS, TLE II/RLII, and one or two others. Am thinking of selling the lot as we are heading towards IPSC guns these days.... but it is a tough, tough thing to do as one grows very fond of them very quickly. Not only do they look pretty, now that I have them figured out I would be my life on any one of them.

Kimber service has been fine to me... I lost my busing (what else is new?) the other day and had to order $35 worth of stuff to get the replacement.... but now I have spares of everything under the sun and it all was taken care of expediciously and arrived in a matter of days. No worries there mate. There are some firearms I would be concerned about with regard to warranty and service. Kimber is not one of them. They make fine firearms indeed.
