Thinking of a new rifle

I have been contemplating the purchase of a new rifle for some time, but can't decide what I want. Caliber will be .223. I have had friends over the years with the Winchester, Remington, and Savage varment rifles and heard good things about all of them. I am not looking at spending a few grand or anything, just a good quality rifle that I can target with, hunt, something I could take anywhere. The last I remember the Savage was decently priced, any feelings on these? On another note, I was thinking of a Norc. AR rifle for 3-gun. Are these of decent quality, and are they AR parts friendly as far as swapping and upgrading? I have to make my current collection of longguns smaller before I purchase anything new, so I am basically in the process of just researching a bit on what my new purchase will be. Appreciate any suggestions and input. Thanks in advance.

.223

If you wanted the best .223 in my opinion would be the New Remington for 2007 Rem 700 xcr long range tactical, 416 stainless barrel 26" flutted,1/9 twist,Bell & Carlson stock with adjustable butt, full lenght bedding block,
I love to have one of these but price app;$1300 cdn

I was just browsing Wholesale sports and was looking at the Savage 12FV Short action; Accutrigger, Blued hvy bbl, syn stock, bbl length 26" . In .223 $589.95. I really like the looks of the model 12VSS with the adjustable synthetic stock. With the bi-pod it looks awesome and really is what I would like, price is $849.95. But the first one I mentioned, the 12FV short action is really a good price, looks good and likely would be better than what I am capable of shooting. Is the quality of these rifles good? Thanks again.

Savage has a long running rep for accuracy in their barrels , its a good budget gun.A step up..
If I were after a .223 , it would be a varmint kevlar CZ(carry gun), or a lamo job, same make cz 527, (heavier field use) but still ok to carry for a bit;) There is only a half lb or so difference , but this is not the hunting forum.

This may be the one I am looking for. Price is good, the right caliber and options I am looking for. I will only be shooting competitively at the local club level, so hopefully it will be adequate, I am sure it will be. I was just curious on how others feel about them, thanks Levi for the input.

For a good precision rifle out of the box, look for varmint rifles. Barrels up to 26" long and heavier, makes for less recoil and more stable. I checked out all the companies out there and my choices were the Rem 700 varmint models and the CZ varmints, but the CZ is my first choice and for me I would go for the 22-250 10 lb varmint with it's 25.5" barrel. But if the .223 is a must I would still go for the CZ varmint. It's got super good revues, and I like the fact of a detachable magazine.

The purchase isn't something that is going to happen immediately, so I will research a little more, the CZ and Remington very well make their way inot my home, I think the good quality and decent pricing of the Savage may sway me though. Thanks for the input.

I have a 12FV in .223... great rifle... very accurate... the stock is a bit plastic, but is still a great rifle...

This is what it can do with Hornady V-max 55gr ammunition (about $.85 a shot)

This is a group using Winchester USA 55gr FMJ (the bulk cheap ammo)

I highly recommend it, espcially for the price as an entry level rifle...

Wow thats impressive. Do you have any pet loads you prefer over others? The only .223 rifles I have right now are a mini 14 and a NEF single shot. With H-335 and WW 55grFMJ's I have gotten really good results out of the not known to be accurate mini. Thanks for posting the pic's.

No one has mentioned a heavy barreled SS Tikka T3. With a 1:8 twist it will handle the 80gr bullets. A few bucks more then the Savages or Remingtons.
The 1:9 twist Savages may or may not shoot the 80 gr bullets.

about the only cheap varmint rifle options i'm aware of are the savage 12's and the new remington sps varmint.

i have a savage 12FV 204, its a great rifle for $535 and shoots under .5. i looked at one of the new SPS varmints this week. they look good, i perfer the 700 action to the savage, but i have gotten better accuracy with the savage. both stocks are moulded plastic with mold seams on the stock.

As for accuracy I did a similar test with my 30-06 using Hornady SST light mag and was doing sub moa past 200 yrds and with the cheaper amo here in town groups opened up a lot.
There's no doupt in my mind about the Hornady cartridges and I'm definitly going to stay with that.

Hi,

I don't reload either... so when I bought the rifle, I experimented with different factory loads...

By far the best is Federal Gold Medal 77gr HPBT, and second is the same in 69 gr (0.4" at 100m)... Hornady comes in next...

Of the cheaper bulk ammo you can get, the Winchester USA 55gr FMJ and the Remington UMC seem to be about the same... and are both less than an inch with a few rounds doing their own thing (See above... little square is 1/2", big square is 1")

If I were doing it all over again, I would for sure get another savage... and I might get one with a nicer stock... but the one on the 12FV is certainly functional.

Savage or Tikka it a great choice, savage would have the accurate over Tikka, but they both are nice choice..

I think that's pretty arbitrary. I have owned Tikkas and their accuracy was outstanding. My Tikka Tactical was basically a one-hole gun. Savage does beat Tikka on price and stock selection hands down.

I must say that the new Savage Long Range Precision Varminter is very exciting. If its accuracy lives up to the anecdotes, I say this would appear to be the next best thing to custom for a very reasonable price.
