Thinking of a Sig Sauer

I've been looking, but can't decide.

Primarily, I'm thinking of a Sig as a carry gun when traveling to the States. So something on the lighter side would be nice. I'm thinking a P226.

I own quite a few .40 cal pistols and thought I'd give a Sig 9mm a go this time. I'm wondering about accuracy differences between the two calibers and would I be able to get accustomed to the different round after being so used to shooting 40s. Do they shoot to point of aim with factory sights? I will not be customizing this one in any way, except maybe the sights if I have to.

I'm not sure about the differences between the stamped steel slides and the forged ones reliability wise, being a loose fit, etc. Or are there cast slides that I could run into.

Should I consider an earlier vintage West German made, or a newly manufactured American one?

I know for sure I don't want stainless, or two-tone. Don't want bling for a carry gun.

DAO, or DA/SA? --- DA/SA can't be carried cocked and locked anyway. What about the DAK verison (Double Action Kellerman) with the improved trigger with intermedite reset point for a lighter trigger pull. Anyone have experience with these new triggers?

What about magazines, how reliable are they? Sig mags are expensive. Wondering how prone to breakage the plastic bottom half is when dropped on concrete.

Can some people in the know help me out with a dicision? :)

What say you?

If you have the right to carry over there, then

9mm, 229, DAO so you can rule out that question in court, and I wouldn't question most Sig's on reliability for carry purposes.

I would agree, the P229 is the way to go. Not only is it a terrific pistol, but it is the issue pistol for both Federal and lots of Local LEO's and while it's not essential, it doesn't hurt to carry a "good guy" gun.

SIG's as carry guns

I have carried Sig's before and even though I do enjoy them very much, they would not be my first choice of a carry gun. At the end of the day, you very much know that you have carried it.

Both the 226 and 229 are pretty big pistols to be carrying concealed comfortably. I think that a lot of Americans carry the 239 which you can get there in 9mm,.40 or .357 Sig. you can also choose between DA/SA or DAK.

Yes.

Stainless slides are machined from barstock, not cast. They are more durable than stamped steel slides. Stainless steel guns tend to have tighter fit than older stamped guns, in my experience. This is likely due to the fact that they are made on CNC equipment, which allows for more precise tolerances.

I'd go with a new American or American slide/German frame one because of the more durable slide and better corrosion resistance.

Personal preference, but I'd go with SA/DA. Better to have crappy trigger pull on the first shot than on every shot.

No problems with Sig or Mec-Gar mags.

I say get a basic, new production Nitron P226R in the traditional SA/DA configuration. If it's good enough for the Navy Seals and the SAS, it'll suffice for your needs as well ;)

Thanks for all your replies. :) I'd like to hear more of your opinions if you will. I know very little about Sigs.

I'm leaning towards a P226 in 9mm so far. I'd prefer a lighter gun and without a rail. I use an M2 Centurion... that's good enough for me. I'm thinking the rail would ad more weight and may be slower out of the holster.

I like what Ganderite and capp325 have to say, DA/SA, why have a crappy trigger for every shot and I'm very used to the Beretta DA/SA anyway. I think TDC also has a point with the caliber not being too important in my case.

I picked up on a few Sig threads posted in this forum and the photo gallery and I'm slowly learning and answering my own questions.

I've taken a likin' to the P229 SAS Gen 2 melded slide I see on their website since I've been reading about the 106mm replacement barrels available from Questar.

I might even go for the .40 cal. for the small difference in round capacity. Hopefully I can swing a Canadian version 106mm barrel with it. Maybe an EFK Fire Dragon Barrel. Are the EFK's a better barrel?

BTW ... what type of rifling cut does Sigs use?
