Thinking of getting a Marlin 795 - any must-do upgrades?

Hey there,

I'm in the market for a new .22 and I've narrowed it down to Marlin 795 or Papoose (If I can find one).

I've heard the triggers on the Marlin are heavy, has anyone worked on them? Are there any other upgrades that are necessary to make it fun for small game and plinking?

I've gone through the Savage bolt actions and 10/22s in the past and want something different and very accurate with minimal work, if you think I'm making the wrong choice let me know. Thanks.

I cleaned mine up, did a trigger tweak (lightening), and put a scope on it. Shoots great with just about anything I feed it.
Great gun for the money.
There's a few other convenience mods on the web, worth a look.

I have a 795 and it worked fine out of the box. The trigger is pretty heavy but there is lots of info online about how to tweak it. I haven't worked on mine yet as I don't find it too bad but my savage trigger is definitely nicer. The things I looked at getting for mine were 25 round mags, peep sights or a scope. Settled on the mags and scope but I might try the peeps at some point. If you want a cheap accurate 22 I dont think you can go wrong with a 795.

great gun out of the box ,not a big fan of the stock at the front seems a bit flimsy but can not complain about operation or accuracy, with a boyds stock would b a excellent buy for the buck

I bought a 795 a couple of years ago. Installed a $45 McCarbo spring kit and polished up the bottom of the bolt (there are videos online that show you how - very easy and quick) and she operates like a dream.

Thanks for the replies, I'll look into the trigger lightening guides.

I think I will go with a scope and not peep sights, I'm not sure which model or the magnification yet though.

I think they held a contest to see who could come up with the worst production trigger ever put on a rifle and awarded the contract to the winner, why,I'll never know.(30 year old Marlins had far better better triggers)but apart from that,it's a very nice rifle, cheaper and some say more accurate than the 10/22.I put a Boyds thumbhole stock on mine, really dresses it up,very comfortable to shoot

Knowing it's an issue, why Marlin hasn't fixed it,I don't know. But if this spring kit works,I'll try to get it(is it available in Canada,if so,who carries it?)

I think you'll be happy with the 795. I've had several over the years plus a Papoose and have loved them all. I still have two 795s and the Papoose. Very accurate for semi-auto .22s. You can expect 2 MOA easy with the right ammo, and you'll probably get better than that once you get used to the trigger.

(yes, the Papoose is in a 795 stock as I found very little need so far to take the barrel off)

The trigger is a little heavy out of the box but it improves with use. At least that's been my experience. I prefer a slightly heavy trigger for unsupported shooting anyway as I find the extra pressure needed to break the shot can help to steady the rifle. This is probably a little unorthodox but it works for me.

The MCARBO spring kit produced light primer strikes in my 795. This is the result of replacing the factory hammer spring with the lightened MCARBO hammer spring. I switched just the hammer spring back to the factory one, leaving the rest of the MCARBO spring kit in place, and the light primer strikes went away.

I removed the magazine disconnect feature on all of my rifles. I just think it's silly. All you need to do for that is snap off the tab at the rear of the silver arm on the action. (the the tab in the mag well, the one on the other end)

Another mod you may want to consider is the slingshot mod. The 795 has a last shot bolt hold open feature, but you have to use the supplied lever to release the bolt after it's locked back. This mod will let you simply pull back on the bolt to release it. It's not a big deal, but it gives you the option and it's not that hard to do.

I bought a 795 a few months ago. Needed a semi-auto plinker. CHEAP!!

Sail had their no-tax sail. Bought the 795 and a 3x9 simmons scope for 200 taxes in.

Rifle works great, with pretty much anything I throw in it. The odd misfire on cheapies, but all in all, a good working gun. Accuracy seems decent. I've got over 1000rounds through it and it's cycling nicely.

I just ordered a couple 25rd mags. (The 10's get spent too quick) ;)

Marlin 795 - Recommended - Great bang for the buck. IMO

Had a marlin m60 (same gun just tube fed). Never a problem with it. Very accurate with mini mags. No mods needed although I did get a dip trigger and guard for it.

I did the mag disconnect too. Only thing I might do is the change to:
Load charged mag
Pull bolt
Release
Bolt closes.

Right now you have to use the bolt release lever. Minor thing, but something that I would like to change. How to videos seem to be straight-forward.

It really is quite easy. I've done that mod on all my marlin semi-autos. The last one took me about 5 minutes since I had figured out all the specifics on the previous two. It makes reloading just that much more intuitive - especially since most other guns already have that feature.

Where did you get the DIP stuff? When I tried to order from them, they wouldn't ship to Canada.

Not from them. They can't ship here. Got a bunch of dip stuff for my 452's as well.

Hopefully no one screws that option up for us because its the only way right now to get their stuff.
