I was going in to the gun shop to pick up a Ruger 10 22 in black with the Stainless barrel, then I saw the Remington 597 with the green stock with a Heavy Barrel for $220…. Its $100 less then the Ruger, if left stock forever it looks a lot nicer… Is it worth the savings from the ruger in quality, does the Heavy Barrel make sense for just range plinking ? It will only be used once in a while to off set some .223 ammo cost lol….

Make sure the magazine with the 597 is a third generation. The third generation has "22LR" on the bottom of the mag and a "circle 10" on the side. These work flawlessly, earlier mags do not.

I have owned a 597 with the heavy barrel for a couple of years and have no complaints. After a little polishing of the hammer, and where the guide rods contact the bolt it runs like a dream. I've been asked if it's an automatic a couple of times. I have had no issues with the magazines. I have two 30 rounders that work great. It's a great rifle for plinking.

They look great, I was strongly considering one a while ago, the only drawback being I wanted iron sights on my .22 rifle. If that isn't one of your requirements, I say by all means save the money and get the 597.

I've got 2 of them and love 'em. I bought Volquartson hammers and extractors as well as some custom bolt handles off the EE here. I only wish there were more stock options, I'd like a nice laminate for one of them, it's in the stock tupperware. The other is in an Arch Angel from Hi Cal. Very accurate, and reliable if you carefully pull them apart, polish, and re-assemble. The guide rods are very easy to over-tighten. Lot's of threads on making them reliable. Not as many aftermarket parts as the 10/22 though.

If you like the gun then buy one... But I'd go for the regular barrel model. Heavy one is not as comfortable.. Unless its in laminate stock. It's a nice wood. My friend has one but I like mine better. Keep in mind this gun isn't as good to customize. Maybe a few things you can do.
Here is mine:
VQ extractor and hammer Boyd's stock, cheaper mil dot scope and charging handle from CGN. I removed iron sights and filled the holes with screws.

i will look for the 3rd gen mags too...

You'll have a hard time finding anything but 3rd gen mags these days, they have been out for years now. I've had a lot of 597s and 2 10/22. What are your plans? 10/22 has more aftermarket available. 597 is more accurate out of the box. 10/22 has better mag choices, there are no metal lipped hi capacity mags for the 597.

If you have no intention of modifying the gun and you just want a cheap reliable plinker, get the 597 or look at a Marlin 60, both will be more satisfying than a stock 10/22.

Bought one as my first gun. Added bypod, scope as well as vq hammer and extractor. The VQ items are cheep but not always needed. some extractors are perect some are not, and the 25$ VQ makes even the guns with good ones go to perfect. The hammer gives lighter trigger pull but people have good results from polishing.

My stock extractor did not like the Remington cheep ammo. I have tried basic Winchester and now have a bucket of bullets form Remington with coated rounds and it shots like a dream. Its a tack driver with the cheep stough I have been feeding it. I will have to try higher qualiaty ammo and see what it can really do. I also still have to float the barrel, its touching in a spot.

In the end I did a huge amount of research into this (drives Wife nuts), and for the price you just can't go wrong. To make a 10/22 shoot as accurate as this, you need need to upgrade or get the top end 10/22 with heavy barrel for crazy prices.

great input !!!! thanks… 597 it is….. Is the Heavy Barrel worth it ? or get a regular barrel that comes with a scope ?

Depends on what you want to do. My HB is dam accurate with cheep ammo. I hear the normal one is also accurate but this should be a little more accurate by default. So are you after plinking or accuracy ?

In the end I don't think you can go wrong. I will note that the HB is short, which leaded fr a rather compact rifle. Alos the Green stock on HB looks bad A$$. Also the scope is not a high end one at all but hey for fun it works.

I have a 597 Yellowjacket. I am interested in targets as well as gophers so I put in a Volquartsen hammer & sear (best money spent). It is a great shooting & handling rifle. Go for it, I think you will like it. A second note I just got another 10-22 with Volquartsen barrel & boyds stock. I had to stone the hammer a lot to reduce the horrible factory trigger pull.
