I was using a heat gun on a mosin stock heating up the wood to remove the cosmoline deep within. And I ended up burning the wood in acoupleof spots and it looked kinda cool. So was thinking on wrapping rope or a cord or some copper wire around itto stripe it then stain overtop. Any suggestions?

I have seen some SVT and mosin done, they look nice if done right! Please don't do it to a collector specimen of the Mosin but if it is just a run of the mill, then why not you are already part way there,;)!

The stain would most likely bleed under whatever you wrap around the wood and come out looking a mess. About the only way you would be able to stop the stain from bleeding where you don't want it, would be to trace the wrap (tape, wire, etc) with a utility knife, making a shallow cut to to act as a barrier of sorts and I'm sure you don't want cuts going round your stock.
Someone else may know a better way to stop stain from bleeding, but I wouldn't do it , but that's just me.
Or you could use spray paint.
