Contemplating selling the thing. I realize that when I first got it, i was drawn in by the aftermarket accessories. But then i got more into bolt guns, and I probably just suck with the iron sights, but I don't think the stock barrel wants to make it out to 100 very well. I'd have to get a new barrel, stock, trigger, yadda yadda yadda.
Alternatively, buy a Savage 93 series or something.

I like Savage rimfire bolt guns and would like to just mount on a scope and go, since they seem rather well set from the factory..

1.) would you recommend .22LR or .17HMR for 100 yard accuracy? Does the .22LR have too much drop? Perhaps I'd like to do some shooting past those distances?
2.) What do you think I could get for the 10/22? 16 1/2" barrel, hardwood stock, just a chip in the rear sight and some white around the crown that probably needs some cleaner to get off. Otherwise everything intact, under 1000 rounds.

I'm not 100% sure yet, but any advice? :)

Depends on the kind of shooting you're talking about. Depends on a bunch of things, actually. If you're shooting targets at 100 yards, drop is irrelevant. You're zeroing for the target at 100 yards. The only time you concern yourself with drop is when you're going to be shooting at unknown ranges, which usually means hunting. Kind of hard to use a 17HMR in a 22LR match, too. Like I said, depends what your use is going to be. If it's hunting small game, the 17HMR might (or may not) suit you better, since it shoots flatter and makes it easier to hit at varying distances. If you're talking about target shooting, well, depends on what you want and if any matches you might shoot in have certain requirements, like 22LR-only, for instance.

Thanks guys! the 10/22 is a brand new model, i just got it a couple of months ago
i might be shooting from unknown distances not too sure
the 22LR model is a lot cheaper though! Both to shoot and the rifle but the .17HMR has more horsepower, flatter shooting

anybody know a good website to check these rifles out at a REASONABLE price? most want an arm and a leg

SIR mail order has the savages at good prices. 22WMR might be something you want to look into as well. A little cheaper to shoot than the 17HMR and has the same range capability. It does not shoot as flat as the HMR though.

Also depends on whether you plan to eat what you shoot. I saw a video someone posted here a while ago with a guy shooting a .17 to 3 and 400 yard shots. Literally blew up whatever he hit. Blew up a grouse and in one shot it looked like all they got of the bunny was some skin and the skull. I eat what I kill and like what I shoot which is why Im keeping my 22. Have a buddy that bought a .17 recently and he sold it shortly after-went back to a 1022. Besides, I can usually get close enough to what I want to shoot that distance is not an issue. My $0.02

Coulda been an HMR the video did not really say. Either that or I wasnt paying close enough attntion. Mebbe someone else saw the vid. Sorry.
