looking at getting a CZ but am not sure of what calibre.

wanting a little more power than my 10/22's but am wanting a caliber that will be around 20+ years from now?

.17 cal?

i would like to hear some fresh opinions on this subjuct.

different cals and such. cost. accuracy, distance. etc etc..

ALSO. who is selling them cheapest around here. any and all input is much appreciated.

I just shot for the first time today, a CZ American in 22LR that I bought used on the EE. Great gun. It doesn't need high dollar ammo to shoot accurately. Aguila SE, American Eagle, CCI standard and Mini mags, Winchester High Velocity, and Federal Target all shot very well. Would have been gopher head shots at 50 yards. The Federal bulk ammo caused about 1/3 of the shots to be fliers off target though. I'm certain its the ammo as I went through about 7 types of ammo and then back to them. Still would hit a golf ball at 50 yards, just not dead centre every time like the other ammo. Those mini mags should be plenty hard hitting for gophers.

Added note: I seriously considered getting a 17hmr, but I already own a 223 and the savings just isn't there to shoot 17. I'd might as well spend a little more and shoot that value pack 223. Or take some time and make reloads. 17 is overpriced compared to 223 in my opinon. And my 223 shoots the white box ammo very well, and at 200 yards.

I have a CZ452 American. It is a delight to shoot and pretty to look at. Then on top of that it is accurate. I will always have a 22 and it looks like the CZ is going to stay. Just got an old BRNO single for my wife and expect it to shoot at least as well as the CZ. That, along with my 223 pretty much covers me for varmints at least out to 200m.

You mean the 223 covers you out to 7-800 yards right?

I have a ruger in 17hmr. We dont have gophers around here but I love shooting this gun. It is a novelty around here and I have found ammo for a resonable price. It is very accurate. Recently purchased a CZ 452. I love this gun too. I think I might spring for the 453 with the set trigger but I already and one of those on my anschutz. For "wow" factor go with one of the 17's (my buddy has a 17hm2 and loves it)for practicality go with .22.

I often hear price of shells as an excuse not to own a .17 hmr.My son and I went out last Saturday with two .17's shot between 40 and 50 gophers without getting up off our chairs. We used 80 rounds the cost was about 20.00$.The box of beer after we were done was more than 20.00$.To me in either case the money was well worth the fun.

I have no experience with the 22 mag. but I have a 17 HMR and really like it. There was recently a 452 American in 22 mag on the EE. Some of the newer shells for 22 mag (CCI had a couple) have gotten great reviews.

You can go easy past 100m of shooting
reasonably "accurate" with 22mag.
However, within 50-75m, it's not going to beat
the venerable 22LR.
They may look similar in concept,
but they are VERY different cartridges altogether.
22mag is more related to 17HMR than 22LR.

That said, buy a 22LR. You can never go wrong with that.

Keeping the same level of accuracy but increasing the power (range),
from 22LR, the next step up is 22Hornet (centerfire, rimmed cartridge),
but it's not a "must", it's not a very necessary step.
No 223 non-sense, no 220 Swift craze, no 30-o-sh!t, no 308 crap,
no retarded bullshyte.
A 6.5 Swedish and maybe a 12ga will complete
all the long gun cartridges you will ever need.

But start with 22LR.

Well, Grantmac, I dont know about 800m but I sure am hoping. Just sold my Ruger no 1 223 to replace with a bolt action. Certainly 300m no problem. This time I will get something with a twist that will take the heavier bullets. 55gr was all the 12:1 twist seemed to like. Seems like a nice matchup though the 2 22s. Both huge fun to shoot and cheap. Life is good. Now to find some varmints.:)

A better quality .22lr rifle is going to shoot more types of cartridges with more consistency than say for example a 10/22. The 10/22 is a good rifle and
they can be made much better but an older model BRNO (eg #2 or #4) or the new CZ453 will easily outperform many modified 10/22s.
Use a good quality hollow point ammo and you should be able to anchor those
critters out to 100m relatively consistently. A better quality 22 is going to give you better shot placement capability thus better impact effect.Just don't expect them to shred on impact. If you want shredding ability go with a 22 centrefire. 222 or 223.

Good shooting
