Thirty Cent Slugs

Just musing...

What if you were to bore a 3/4”hole in a piece of wood, say, an inch or a bit more deep. Then you pounded the corner of a razor blade up from the far side and into the bottom of the hole so it stuck up a bit and in from the side of the hole an 1/8” or so. Then you could just insert a shell, the push and twist it a few times to slice to inside of the crimp out.

Hmmm. Just don’t stick your finger in the hole..

Like this?

Wrist gets tired quickly, and different brands of ammo have different crimps heights. Hole cutter is better, in my experience.

Yeah. Exactly like that. But yeah, I like your hole cutter better. Chuck it in the drill press and whip up a whole box.

I'd love to try this for a .410, but not sure how it work out a full choke.

I saw a video of someone shooting 12ga wax slugs out of a full choke. They broke into pieces and looked more like buckshot. Not sure what size shot or type of wax was used.

I've been making slugs with the lee 1oz mold. I just roll em from scratch though. No time for cutting em open lol

I have a 20ga Lyman sabot slug mold on order. Looks like a big pellet gun pellet. Should be interesting

I’ve seen good reviews for those Lyman slugs on the youtubes. Pretty stable.

I made real slugs using both the Lyman giant air-gun pellet and the Lee foster style slug.

With the 16mm drill bit, the rolled mouth of the hull is left in place. This captures the plastic wad column. I push the slug in by hand and then tap it with the round end of my ball peen hammer. This pops the slug below the hull rolled lip, and it too is then captured in place.

These are plinking slugs because they only have mild target load powder charges, but they knock over steel just fine.

Can you show pictures of the accuracy tests? Or quote group sizes?

A gopher? Ouch!

not really. it was a pretty impromptu test involving a cut open pop can to melt the broken candle on the woodstove at the range so only 2 rounds were made. they both went right where i aimed at roughly 20 paces. i figure they would be minute of gopher at 30 yards. what was impressive was that a cardboard box packed with snow 4 inches thick dissipated almost all of the energy from the round.

So I made a few up with what little paraffin wax I had laying around and it went very well. But I went to buy some more wax and the lady at TSC handed me a brick of what she called “paraffin wax”. In a hurry and suffering from the flu, I took it, paid and left without reading the label. When I got home, I realized that I had mistakenly purchased “hand soap base”.

I was going to exchange it but got to thinking...

I’ve seen you tubers testing out wax slugs for a variety of things, including home defense. While shooting the wax slugs through drywall, they didn’t break up the way they had hoped, and over-penetrated through several of their improvised walls.

The soap is MUCH softer. I don’t even know if it would hold up to being fired. But if it did, I wonder if it would be the ideal “home defense” type of round that would be lethal, but break up completely when going through a wall...

I’ll plan to put it to the test eventually, but if any of you waxers get the chance first, post your results :)

I had no issues with the 1oz

Its not that theirs is anything wrong with the 1ox slugs just that their 7/8 are better balanced and fly straighter. Ive found the 7/8 groups better for me as well. There is a few videos out there discussing this and the high speed video showing the flight characteristics of both.

wait, let me get this straight, you're putting a 45cal round ball on top of the shot and crimping it together? That's hilarious. I wonder how much 00 buck pellets you could remove and put the ball in, that would be awesome.

Yeah I’m not sure what you’re referencing here...

Ok nope. Not even a little bit.

Gave it a try. The closest the soap got to melting was “Oreo cream” texture. Nevermind lol.
