I have a 300wby ultralight, very nice firearm, shoots 180gr as straight as can be, 1/2' hundred yards but when I lighten it up to 155gr its more crooked than the liberal party. its under an inch at 25 yards but goes out as far a 5' groups a hundred yards does the twist not like the load or what? I want to shoot a lighter grain but the heavier it gets the staighter it seems to shoot.
 
I have a buddy with a 300WSM and it does not like 150gr. bullets at all, not even hunting level accuracy. Go up to 180gr. and it shoots MOA or better all day. As mentioned, try slightly heavier bullets and see how that goes. It is all in the relationship between weight, twist and harmonics that determines if your rifle likes a particular weight or type of bullet.

Sound to me like you should try 200's!

The short bullets may not like the long "free bore" jump to the lands. Try seating them out as far as you can.
 
Back when I used the 300 WBY a lot I used the 200 Noslers. This was before X bullets and other premiums. They shot great. Your 300 is a lazer even with heavier bullets. Shoot the big ones and be happy.
 
I have a 300 win mag that does the same thing, in fact if I go up in weight to 200gr the groups are even better than the 180gr 165gr are a bit better than 150's but they are no where near as consistant as the hevier ones. I think its the speed related to the twist that makes them wander. The lighter projectiles do move faster through the tube so the must tend to over spin for their mass.
 
What the hells the point in shooting 150's with a .300Wby???? Case has enough capacity to shoot 180's flat enough for everything one cares to hunt.

thats a good point.. a quick look at the ballistics showed me that their was no point at all in going with the lighter bullet in that calibre for longer ranges, and for shorter ranges why not just load the 180 down if it is to much for what you intent to hunt.. if there is such a thing!
 
you didn't say what kind of bullets you were shooting my weatherby dosen't like boattail bullets. I read an article on al triple shock bullets that said if your barrel was on the outer edge of the factory tolerance it might not shoot completely copper bullets well because bullets with lead in them expand slightly when fired making them tighter in the bore than copper bullets.
 
I have 2 300 wbys one is and ultralight and the other is a deluxe made in japan that has no problem shooting what ever I throw down it thats why I ask, and I have a bunch a 150gr interbond that I have to get rid of hence wanting to shoot lighter loads, but your right for velocity and energy it make more sence to shoot 180s.
 
My 300wby liked the 150 TTSX and RL-19. About one grain short of book max was 3/4" groups. I forget the speed but it was around 3475. My gun had a light #1 contour 24" bbl so the ulw should be able to handle 155's.
