Here's an interesting one... I "had" a friend that got forcefully admitted to a hospital for contemplating (attempting?) suicide a year or so ago with his revolver. Thankfully he moved. Apparently he still has firearms and they were never taken from him. Do you think he'll be able to renew his rpal? I seriously hope not. His wife also has a pal. I still talk to her and she's worried she may have to give her gun up (passed down from her father). I wonder what her chances are... and yes she still lives with him.

I hate to see anyone lose their guns , but mental illness is nothing to play with , I've had 2 people in my life kill themselves and in my opinion there's nothing you can do to stop them ,( just make sure they know you love them and are there to talk ) as for wether or not his wife will have to give hers up , I seriously doubt she would have to . That being said if your partner was a raging alcoholic would you keep booze in the house ? It may or may not be a good time to put them in long-term storage somewhere ( don't know the legal end of this last statement ) let's hope this was a temporary lack of good judgement on your buddies part and he decides that life is worth living , good luck Ernst

Thanks Ernst for the reply and sorry to hear about your losses. Yup that is something not to play with. I should see if she can transfer it to me for the time being, or someone else she knows with a licence. Scary stuff...

If he didn't do anything (meaning just thought about it and told his wife ) no shots fired, unless his wife says anything, he will be able to renew according to the law (cause no one told them of the drama). If he didn't renew and his RPAL expired, his wife with the PAL only cannot have the revolver it's a restricted.

The fact that he was forcefully admitted to hospital..to me sounds like it was a police Mental Health Act arrest..

If thats the case..there will be a report on file and very likely a caution on CPIC..in which case he will have an up hill battle to renew.

Offering someone help if they are suicidal is a noble goal. Taking away their stuff because they are suicidal I don't agree with. If they're serious about killing themselves, they're going to accomplish the goal one way or another.

Let them take their own life with their own firearm, rather than jumping in front of a bus or driving into an on coming truck.

I thnk this may be an issue for licence eligibility. From the firearms act, link and quote.

Thats a tough call NavyCuda.. as taking away their guns may make them more depressed..

But a lot of suicidal people could care less about inconveniencing others..and some with a lot of anger will be interested in killing others first. Its hard to guess what someones intentions are when they dont even know.

I'll side with the firerams being taken away...

We dont need another Sandy Hook up here causing an anti gun backlash.

I would have to agree with this
