Let me know what you guys think on this one! Longest episode yet!

Awesome! I love C&Rsenal!

As much as I love owning and shooting Ross Rifles, especially with the history and the Canuck connection, it doesn't take a genius to recognize its shortcomings...

One of my biggest qualms is with the primary extraction.

I liken the political meddling and pigheaded nationalism that led to the adoption of the Ross MkIII to the US experience in their adoption of the M14 and the .308 over the desired NATO adoption of the FN FAL in .280 (or even the British EM-2).

Anyway, another great video. Thanks! :)

Thanks! Honestly you can just tell the creator had ADHD and kept getting models to 90% and then moving on to the next idea.

I remember reading a memoir, I think in the Legion magazine, of 2nd Ypres that was written by a soldier from the Winnipeg Rifles / 8th CEF. In it he talks about his rifle jamming soon after arriving in France and curses "that moronic bastard Sam Hughes and his Ross rifle."

Maybe give Frank Iriam`s memoirs "In the Trenches" a read. He was also a member of the Winnipeg Rifles.

He was a great fan of the Ross rifle, even used his long after the others gave them back.

C&Rsenal is an absolute gem of a channel. I really like how you guys present your information -- historically factual without being too dense, and you keep things light without sacrificing the serious subject matter. Seeing a new episode of Primer show up in my YouTube feed is always a treat!

It's connected to the magazine follower. When you push down on the levee it lowers the follower. Theoretically it speeds up reloading, but since you have to carefully stagger the rounds to avoid rimlock I don't find it helps any. Very neat feature though, particularly when you disassemble it and see the long pivot of the follower.

What is the purpose of the lever on right side of mk2 in front of the receiver? Was always wondering about it.

It's called a Harris lever or Harris platform--a thumb-button you push down on and it depresses the mag follower. It is a feature which was developed in the early Marks of Ross rifle, predating the charging platform and as the reply above mine suggests was designed to allow faster loading. It persisted on the later 1905 Mk patterns even after many had been fitted with charger bridges.

All I can say is my Ross is the best milsurp rifle I own. Shoots dead on and all parts are tightly put together and feels like new maybe because people were afraid to shoot it. It is well balance and has a thick barrel.

Favorite in order:
Ross
Lee Enfield No. 1 mk III
Springfield 1903
Mosin Nagant sniper PU
K31
Mauser
Mosin Nagant m38
Mosin Nagant m44
Mosin Nagant 91/30

The Harris platform was used for "dump loading" cartridges into the magazine. You depress the lever, dump five cartridges into the mag recess, then alternately release, push, release the lever a few times and it orients the cartridges rim in front of rim. Try it, it works!

Quite a few errors: "Ross issued chamber cleaning sticks", "chamber pinching", "oversize British ammunition". Forgot about the crappy US made ammo of course and the steel suppliers were in the USA too of course. I'll bet the bad steel in the bolt heads was no accident. "This horrible experience in Canadian history...don't feel too bad about Charles Ross he gets two million dollars..." Blah, blah. Ross spent a million out of his own pocket buying materials and tools because the government spent 1914 and much of 1915 wringing their hands in indecision in case they spent too much money too soon! ".280 Ross a good idea but poor execution..."?? It's nice to work with your spouse, but there are limits. The talk about the balance point is nonsense. No difference between fired and unfired when opening the bolt? I don't think so. After about 42:00 they might as well have called it quits, just random chatter.

Good try overall, it's hard to know about every rifle.
