This rifle any good?

its a savage, not a safe queen:D (a good thing) I would reccomend replacing the scope if you do pick it up and throw on some weaver bases/rings.

which cartridge were youthinking of buying?

I have one savage and 2 stevens. They are no frill guns (except for accutrigger which mine dont have), but will put meat in the freezer.

And stay away from the remmy 710. JUNK!! not sure about the 770 but I would assume it is as well. the modell 700 and 7 are still good choices if you can justify/afford them

Yes

Yes, it is... ;)

I think that will be a good gun. I have one of the 111 package guns with removable "clip" and I think they are a real bargain. The only fault I can pick is with the stock. The foreend is flexible and used to contact the barrel. This was altering the point of impact slightly when I shot off a rest. I hope to replace it with a laminate stock, if Boyds ever ships mine to me.

Thinking either 7mmRM for a longer range hunting rifle.

And yes I would replace the scope and rings, but not right away....gotta pay rifle off first :D

I had a 710 two years ago, sold it and will never buy a remmy again.

I'm pushing a buddy in that direction. I'm sure the scope is adequate and, let's face it, lots of guys can't justify spending the price of a rifle on their scope.

Cant say from experience but iv been interested for some time , havent read a bad word about them other than the cheap stock . Think il order up a stevens to start and see how i like it . Is that a Boyds stock on yours there Powderburner ?

I had one in 270 win. The stock had been replaced with a Boyds laminate and it was a great shooter. cant go wrong for the price. Not sure about the combo scope, never tried it.

The scopes on the Savage package rifles seem to be an econo Simmons. 'Course the econo scopes of today are light years ahead of the econo scopes of 20 years ago. But I agree, I'd swap it out for a much better one, like a Bushnell Elite 3-9 or a Leupold VXII 3-9....

Rifle is good the rest of the package is cheap unreliable junk. I would buy the bare rifle and through a decent set of rings and scope and you'll be shooting better then guys with rifles 4x the amount :D

I have the savage 116FSAK in 300 win mag. Not the package but probably pretty close to the same rifle, and I love mine. Im sure the scope will suite you fine until you want to put another one on, if ever. I dont imagine they would put a scope on a rifle where after 10 rounds the cross hairs are laying in the bottom of the scope.
