This year, the Burgermaster might do the job

Some ppl on here might recall a few posts of mine on the virtues of buckshot. I love the stuff. I've killed several deer with it, and always recommend it up close.

But the last couple years, it's been my crossbow that's done the job, as I've hunted verrrrryyyyyy close to some big money subdivisions, and anything but a bow was asking for trouble, despite being a legal distance from houses.

This year, I'm going to try my best to tag out in bow season, with either the Barnett Wildcat C5 or the Hoyt compound (first year for that!).

But if I don't, then I think I'm breaking out the 10 gauge H&R single shot, a.k.a. "The Burgermaster."

I bought some buckshot for this gun last fall, when I started hunting in big buck country. I'd smashed plenty of smaller deer with nothing more than the 8-pellet 00 Hornady Superperformance load (and that's always going to be my go-to load for 12 gauge). But the country I was hunting was known for big bucks, and I wanted more knockdown power as well as maybe a bit more range, so I bought the big 10 gauge 00 shells. I got them off a member here, don't even know if they're made anymore.

I'm in an even better spot this year, where my brother-in-law screwed up last year, spooking a big buck twice. I know the deer here are the biggest I've had a chance at yet; there's always a few smashers knocked down in this area. So, while I would love to tag out early with an arrow, part of me is still hoping the Burgermaster will get the job done ...

Is it the ‘burger’ master because you intend to combine the role of harvesting and processing into sausage with the one shot? Or does it refer to the magisterial position similar to a town's mayor and most often spelled in English as Burgomaster, but having been borrowed through Dutch and German is also variously found as burgomeister, burgomeester, burghermeister, and so on? I think your mayor will do his duty either way.

How many pellets in your 10ga. buck? Have you patterned it? How much did your shoulder regret pulling that trigger for weeks afterward??

It's a burgermaster for both reasons .... ;)

It has an 18-pellet 00 load. I have not patterned it yet, probably next time I go to range.
