Bought my first new center fire rifle back in the summer of 2009, a thompson icon classic. It was my first new centerfire rifle, and I was happy to get it after all the hype printed in the magazines about how well built it was, leading accuracy and the sub-moa guarantee. I got it for what I thought was a steal at cabela's in Winnipeg for just under $700. Reason it was marked down was due the to fact it was in hornady's new caliber, 30TC, something nobody wanted I guess. After doing some reading on the caliber, it delivered some pretty good statistics, reasonable recoil and was to be the next big thing.....

But then it wasn't.

While the cartridge never really caught on, it was sort of a staple that TC promoted. Hornady is still making it (as far as I know), but every where I've gone its been on sale somewhere (good for me), because no one wants to carry it (poor sales I'm guessing). Even Thompson center has dropped it as an option altogether. To top it off, they've gone full bore into the cheap rifle market with the venture's, and now the dimension's, and the Icon models, which every one of my hunting buddies drool over, is gone completely from their offerings.

Either there has been some major changes going on at smith and Wesson, or they have got their heads on sideways, but how can there be any sense (financially) in producing something for what, 3 years, then dropping it all together? Most manufactures make something for several years before they ever change a line completely or make minor changes to their current lines. Why the idea to drop the line of icon's altogether, why not just make ventures, dimensions AND Icon's? Feels like the firearm industry, at least from TC's perspective, its like the auto industry, coming up with something new every 3-5 years, and forgetting they built some decent classics that didn't need to go away, because people liked them the way there were.

On doing some research, I saw there was a massive recall on all Icon's ever built over the safety mechanism, I've sent mine in for warranty repair, but hope to have it back soon. I enjoy the Icon, its been through a half dozen successful moose hunts, always draws attention, has a good, solid feel to it. Accurate, reliable and ###y, everything you want in a hunting rifle.

Anybody else have one? What's your story?

I feel your pain with the clowns at TC. Its like they are bi-polar or ADD.
I am a fan of the pro hunter and can not get any more barrels here in Canada, unless they are in the "standard" Canadian Tire calibers. Currently have 13 different barrels (calibers) and 5 new ones under construction at a gun smith friend.
The 30TC is a good cartridge, performs well, and I like it because its different.
Ever sense S&W took them over, TC has been a mess of poor support, no focus on product, and inconsistent platforms at best. Too bad, as they have (had??) some great people in their R&D department that were good at generating new rifle systems.
All we can do is hope they stabilize and see the error of their ways. I have sent them letters over this and interesting enough, never got any response.
Local Gun Shops I`ve talked to claim really bad service and supply; pretty much anti-export out of the USA, which doesn't help their S%"tty reputation.

I have owned a few of TC's offerings. They have all been good value for the price paid. The two Ventures that I owned both were accurate and had no function issues. However, I got tired of the recall BS so I sent them in for the fix and then sold them.

As for the cartridge you shoot that issue applies to all manufacturers. If you shoot something proprietary or new be prepared to get into reloading as factory ammo vanishes if it doesn't catch on. One of the first things I do if I buy a new rifle is to secure dies and a supply of brass.

You'll find that the good old cartridges have been around forever for a good reason and the vast majority of the new stuff is just hype.

Just reload and it will solve your problem. Thought about a left hand dimension but now these guns I think don't exist in canada. Had the same problem with a switch barrel cva apex when barrels were quoted at 450 and only available at basspro. Recalls are tough due the fact gun buyers do not want to deal with warranty work that drags on and takes months. Have always thought the encore or pro hunter was so overrated.

I kind of had it in my head that someday I would have to reload. I remember looking for dies not long after I bought it when people starts asking '30Tc...wha?' but never could find any until posting today. Even so, the 'magic' powder is not available for purchase, which was supposedly made this cartridge so special. Reloading was something like 200fps less than factory load stuff, but that is old 3rd hand information, maybe things have changed.

I've seriously considered listing it on EE and moving on to something else, but with the sentimental value now attached, I'll probably hang onto it, and still buy something else :p Next raining day maybe I'll sit down and write a letter to TC, telling them how much I love the Icon, give the customer perspective. But I like Bonemaker think they've done nothing but a nosedive since S+W took them over. I was having good communication with them about getting warranty work done, but once they found out I was Canadian, they just referred me to a Vancouver smith and broke off communication from that point.

I have an Icon in .243 and it's one of the most accurate rifles in the cabinet - pretty too with the Ultrawood. The rifle has been with me for several deer harvests, and the largest animal to date was taken with it. Fear not with the the 30 TC - it'll just push you into the reloading thread of this website and onto another hobby. Save all your brass and keep an eye out for more to squirrel away and you'll be fine. Hell, I just got into a 6.5x54 and manage to find brass and bullets. Dies are available too, you should grab a good set when you get the chance...

It's too bad that the original owners sold out to Smith and Wesson because they were onto a good thing there. The rifle will head in for the recall eventually, but I never use the safety so not too terribly concerned. When hunting I rarely have one down the spout - just cycle one in when opportunity presents itself.

If you ever decide to sell it shoot me a pm before listing

When TC first came out with the Icon I was looking for a hunting rifle.
I purchased an Icon Classic in 30-06. It's a very well made rifle and it's very accurate.
A year ago I was browsing the EE and found a TC Icon Classic in .243 for a fair price.
The .243 is incredibly accurate. They are excellent rifles and I was dissapointed that they discontinued them.

I have a really nice Icon in 308 - super accurate, well built, and IMHO some serious thought was put into this rifle - I was blown away that they didn't sell more, for whatever reason they didn't is a shame. I will say that warranty in Canada sucks, as does their distributor...
The safety issue I could never figure out, i did everything i could to get mine to misfire but it held steady - i did not send mine in yet as there is no issues and nothing very happened - was there an issue or was it stupidity that brought the recall on??? In my readings it seems as tho the latter...
They are not a light rifle, which is fine by me - easy recoil, well balanced, well made - and accurate!
Now if I could only find an ultra wood stock for it....

I have a TC pro Hunter. It started as a .223 rig but was reamed to .223AI. I get .5 " groups fire forming it is insane. With 53 grain pills they run 3800 fps insane again. I love the rifle.

Boy am I glad to hear that these are good, accurate rifles. I went into a local gun shop today and there was an Icon with walnut stock in 30-06. In a spur of the moment decision I bought it. While my wife was not overly amused, the shop owner said I would be very happy with it, and the reviews I been reading online have been positive. I gotta get a scope for it and then get out and shoot this thing.

Guaranteed to shoot well. More than most of the North American manufacturers will give you.

I have a Weathershield Icon in 30-06.
Pros:
-Great stock.
-Extremely accurate.
-Nice trigger.
-Bolt is smooth.
Cons:
-The magazines were problematic on some rifles. Mine wouldn't feed reliably, I sent it in for warranty and it came back fine on 2 out of 3 mags.
-The trigger has a safety recall. I sent mine in, the gun didn't display any concerns but I figured getting it done was a smart thing to do. They had the gun about 6 months, returned it with about half the packaging I sent it with and when I got it the barrel had punched through the end of the box and the barrel got a large carve mark in it (cosmetic). The safety doesn't work like it used to and none of the magazines seat without majorly smacking them (think hard hit, really hard). When I contacted TC about my concerns they basically told me that it was as good as it will be and accept it as it is- too bad for me...

I really love many aspects of the gun but as a company I'm done with them.
Note: the safety recall was also for the Venture rifle design as well.

Me too. I bought one 5 or so years ago in 30-06. I don't have any other barrels. I put a 3.5-10 vx3 on it. They look funny but boy does it ever feel nice when you shoulder it. Being single shot is not a disadvantage, although I take a lot of flak from some hunting friends. It's just flat-out a pleasure to shoot.
