I been hunting with a M38 Swedish Mauser with iron sight, I feel I reached my limit with the Mauser, the gun is more accurate than I am, it's my eye sight isn't good enough. on last Sunday's morning hunt, I called out a coyote with Primos KI-YI, It won't get closer than 100m. the light condition wasn't good, my poor eye sight, the open sight and the grass field made it difficult to see the coyote, didn't want to injury the animal, so I didn't take the shot. after that hunt, I think I need a rifle with a scope. (It was interesting to see the coyote try to sneak up to the ducks in the pond...it might be searching for a bigger meal than rabbit)

I live in Southern Ontario, most situation I will be shooting 100m, at most 300m, Looking for something reliable and accurate within 300m (I think most gun should be accurate in that range...). caliber wise, I will go with 270win, so I can use the rifle for coyote, deer and black bear.

after some browsing on the internet, I find two rifle that fits my need, 1: Tikka T3 lite SS, 2: Thompson Center Pro hunter.

seems like Tikka has the most value in the bolt action section. the sub moa guarantee is a big attraction.
The TC pro hunter is unique, don't see many people using single shot. due to it's simple construction, I thought it must be more robust. The ability of changing barrel interests me. one down side is the barrel length, it's only available in 28 inches (from Cabelas' website), which in my opinion is too long and unnecessary. if I go with the TC, I will have to get a gunsmith chop off 5 inches from the barrel. I much prefer a rifle I can use right out of the box,

In your opinion which one is better? or there is a rifle better than these two ???? (within $1000 range, TC is over $1000 but getting another barrel would be cheaper than getting another rifle)

I'm into the prohunter right now. The 28 is like having a 23" if you get an ammo holder on the butt stock they aren't bad for follow up shots. I have a .223 I shoot coyotes with...very accurate.

I have a prohunter, and love it. As mentioned before, it is the same length as most bolt guns due to the fact that there is no action, per-se, so that 28" barrel can get you every single f/s possible with your ammo. (even more if you reload and use slower powders). They shoulder really nicely, and as far as being a single shot, coyoyes rarely if ever need a second shot.
A bit of practice made me every bit as fast to reload it as with a bolt action rifle.
BUT, I won't slag the Tikka. I have owned several and They are very very smooth rifles, but I do not think they are quite as good as the price suggests. (I liked them, but not enough to keep any. ) There are better values out there in my opinion. Check out a weatherby vanguard or Howa 1500 if you like value for your money.

thanks for all the replys.

I see the Tikka T3 and TC pro hunter has the same overall length, but it's always nice to have a lighter and shorter gun, at 200m, I don't think I would see a significant difference. It's my personal preference to go with 23 inch barrel.
I just realize it makes more sense to have a gunsmith make a 23 inch barrel than buying TC barrel and have the gunsmith cut 5 inches off. anyone knows how much it cost to buy a TC barrel from gunsmith in Ontario, or is there aftermarket barrels available???
If I go with the TC, I will probably get the pro hunter muzzle-loader, then get a after market barrel in 270.

From all the threads I read, seems people either love TC ph or hate TC pro hunter. some people were saying a trigger job is required on these rifles, any TC owners have the same issue?? I thinks it's ridiculous for a $1000 rifle requires trigger job right out of box.
I'm not terribly concerned with follow up shot on the TC. in most case if I miss the first shot, the animal would be running into the bush, unless I'm using semi auto, I don't think I will be able to make follow up shot, that's also one reason I'm looking at single shot.

which store sells Howa 1500? I never see Howa rifle at local gun shops...

The newer pro hunter weathershield barrels are 26" instead of the stainless 28" barrels. Either can be a pain to find.
I vote for the T/C, never needed atrigger job on either of mine.
it's a light easy handling gun with the rifle barrel but is heavy with the muzzleloader barrel.

And just to screw you up some more they used to make stainless encore barrels in 26" length as well. And they have 15" barrels available too............

Single shot vs bolt. Had a single cva apex and the changing barrels is great but the barrels are like 400 bucks. Tikka all the way.

If you go stainless it costs only $40 - $50 to get a Prohunter barrel shortened they are more accurate when they are shorter as well this is due to the whip/vibrations from the long barrels.

I have 2 Prohunters and 4 barrels.

I had my 28" stainless fluted 30-06 and 375H&H barrels shortened to 22".

Had my 28" stainless fluted 25-06 barrel shortened to 24" and getting my 24" stainless Encore 45-70 barrel shortened to 19" in the next couple of weeks.

A must read on barrel lengths tests for anyone looking at buying a Prohunter.

As to Tikka's up until recently I looked at them with a bit of disdain then my buddy bought 3 stainless synthetic models in 243/270 Win/338 Win mag these are far more accurate rifles than I ever dreamt they would be to say I am impressed is an understatement.

A shortened Prohunter is a fun fast handling accurate rifle swapping out barrels is a major bonus you can even buy a restricted length barrel (shorter than 18.5") and install it if the overall length of the non-restricted firearm is longer than 26" which translates if you have a 13.5" length of pull butt stock you can go down to a 12" barrel.

A Tikka is an excellent accurate rifle/detachable mag combo.

Nothing wrong with either and I really can't recommend one over the other.

I vote Pro Hunter or better yet just a straight Encore. If you can only find a Pro Hunter go with that but then start looking for Bergara barrels for it. Jerry @ Mystic Precision got me mine. I didn't really like the PH stock as I use a short 12.5" LOP so I had to buy an aftermarket stock as the PH stocks can't be shortened. Not a real chore as Tony Gettel makes beautiful replacements for very reasonable money. http://www.tonysforendsandgrips.net/ I also am not a fan of the fluted 28" barrels on the PH and don't like the look of shortened ones, they work but IMO look strange. Bergara and Encore barrels start life shorter and are non-fluted so easily cut to any legal length. If you do decide to go TC definitely check out Mike Bellm's site as listed by CC, more info than anywhere else I have ever found on these great guns.

I'm very interested in the TC design, but after some research, I think I will be going with Tikka. simply because there isn't a store stocks aftermarket (bergara) barrels regularly. if I can't get barrels for the rifle, I'm no longer interest in the rifle.
unless anyone here can offer me a 23 inch ss 270 win barrel, or where I can order one inside Canada (tried mystic precision, and prairie gun trader, all came back negative), I will be picking up a Tikka this weekend.

that's the only problem I've come across with T/C, finding stock...... since the S&W takeover....... was much better before the takeover. had a problem with a 12ga slug barrel (base holes were drilled too deep, common I heard after) and just couldn't get it replaced with the same but took a 20ga slug barrel instead, I do like the 20ga though........
good luck with the tikka, hope you like it.
