I'm new to this site, so I don't really know where to put this, but here goes lol.
I have been pondering a new gun for a couple years now, but it always managed to get put on the back burner again and again, so it gave me plenty time to look around. I was interested in a few different guns... Remington 700 BDL or XHR....and the Thompson/Center Icon or Venture were what I was pretty sure I'd pick from. I am a hardcore fan of wooden stocks, and was leaning toward the Icon because of all the good I have heard about it. I don't use guns for show, and figured I'd probably be pretty hard on it, so despite not being a fan of composite stocks, I ordered a Venture in 30-06. I figured the price was better and I wouldn't be scratching up a $1000 gun.
As soon as I got the gun, I thought it was a nice looking gun up close even though it was composite. The stock fit nice... all the lines were smooth... no molding marks or anything like that. The only real flaw I can see is that the fore end kind of turns off to the right, leaving the left side of it pretty close to the barrel...but it's not touching. There are a couple things that leave me a little on the disappointed side... the clip is plastic...which will probably be just fine, but I'd like metal better, and the gray grips on the sides were advertised as rubber inserts for added grip...but they are simply the same as the stock, but painted gray I'd say.
The bolt works really quite smooth and the adjustable trigger on this gun is really nice... my old Remington 7600 doesn't even start to compare lol. I temporarily mounted a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 scope on it and took it to the range to see how it was to shoot. It didn't take me long to get it zeroed in half decent, even though it was a crappy day for it.... was about -5 and was blowing about 35 mph...not a good day to get a good tight group, and I wasn't being too fussy lol. I had no trouble keeping it inside a 2 inch target at 100 yards... shooting Federal 180gr. power-shoks.
By the time hunting comes around I will have a much better scope, and will take my time getting it sighted in real nice, but so far I have to say I'm glad I picked the Venture.
Anyone else have any experience with a TC Venture, and what do you think of them ?
