thompson contender 45/70 gov't

Use any loading data suitable for trapdoor rifles and you will encounter loads that will not be excessive for the contender but will most likely be excessive for your hand. Especially the 400gr+ loads!

I have a s/s synthetic stocked T/C Contender carbine with a 22" 45-70 chambered barrel and have been loading for it for about 7 years now.

Here is a few of my top loads

48grs H322 400gr Speer = 1650fps

43grs Re#7 405gr Rem JFP = 1680fps

55grs H322 300gr Alfa Lafranck Spitzer = 1910fps

54grs H322 300gr Hornady HP = 1850fps (lighter plinking load)

These loads are all top loads in my rifle so before using this data reduce by at least 15% and work up slowly and safely like I did.

Now a fun load... 8)

I had been reading about quiet/squib low velocity 45-70 loads for years and finally decided too give it a try.

I started with 8.0grs Tite-Group held in place with styrofoam with a 450gr hard cast bullet, which gave me a velocity of 860fps and a fairly loud bang.

I worked down to 2.0grs Tite-Group held in place with styrofoam with the same 450gr cast bullets but this time the bullets were placed into the cases backwards and seated until they looked almost like a wadcutter.

These gave an average velocity of 295fps and the hammer hitting was louder than the shot going off.

This load was shot using factory T/C iron sights resulted in a 1 1/2" group @ 25 yards. This load shoots through a 2X4 @ 20 yards. 8)
