I was in the Gun Shop in Vegas a few weeks ago and was told a new one was $1500 US
1) NEW one? AFAIK, these have not been made since the '86 (US) law.
2) Vegas ain't in Canada and a Thompson will fetch considerably less here, even if a genuine, registered FA.
If it isn't registered, it isn't worth squat.

What they are "worth" and what someone is willing to pay for a safe-queen that cannot be taken to a shooting range may be two different things....

Those of us that are grandfathered in for the right classes of firearms to own them (12(2), 12(3), or 12(5) depending on what type of gun it is) tend to think a bit before we buy new guns....although...some guys like buying Airsoft Galils and calling them "Real Steel".

If deactivated, and in OK condition, a 1928 will fetch between $1500-2000. A M1 will fetch $1100-1400. Things like drum mags will add to that amount.
A live gun is not neccessarily worth more, and may well be worth less.
What a backwards world we live in.

I'm just telling you what the salesperson told me, I was in shooting one and the conversation came up.

M28 Thompson

In another life I was a young cop in St.James, Manitoba. The year the feds turned all the big city airports into International the RCMP were detailed to police them Since the Winnipeg airport was in our jurisdiction I showed one young mountie ( just out of boot camp ) the layout and surrounding terf. He was getting his uniform on in the airport locker room and I was waiting for him when I saw him take his .38 S&W out of his holster and reach in his locker and pull out a S&W 357. My kind of cop. Outside he wanted to show me what he had in his truck of his patrol car. There in all it's glory was an M28, ready to rock & rock, drup & stick mags, still in the wooden military packing crate. I visited him later when he was transferred to Regina and he blew my mind as his idea of apartment furnishings was a collection of fully operable machine guns of different nations. But to get back to the cost. He paid $75.00 for the M28, still in the crate with spare mags and parts. After WW11 you could buy a Sherman tank cheap. Some outfit in Orillia, Ont. had tons of weapons for sale surplus. I could have bought a Sten or Reising for $45.00. Makes you want to cry thinking back to the good old days. Alex.

OK... but here's something a little more recent.

From the March 1974 issue of The Gunrunner (alas, I was nowhere near old enough to buy ANY type of gun, but still had an interest at such a young age and got my hands on one of these newspapers).
The vendor was Haines Gun House in Halifax.

And yes, these were all live, all fully functional... look at the FG-42, very pricey by '74 standards but just imagine what one is worth today.

Of how about a genuine C2... I wonder just HOW one of those became legally available to the public. But then again, pre C51 (the first "modern" gun control law, which came into force Jan 1 1978), it was a very different world for the gun enthusiast in this country.

What IS funny about this ad is that you could buy the L1A1 for $199 in 1992 (I know, because that's when I bought one). Albeit, a Century Arms parts gun and not a "genuine" all parts matching like the one in this ad probably was.

Update

I've been very busy sorry about the delay and thanks for all the information.

My friend said he joined on here but I can't seem to find him.

At any rate he's asked me to post it for him on here so you can look for the ad which will have a pic of it. From what I see in the pic it looks mint.

To answer the questions that were posed:

  • he has identified it as an: Auto Ordnance Thompson Sub-Machine Gun, Model 1927 A1 "Commando".
  • He is 12(5) and 12(6)

Thanks for all your responses,

Sapper

The 1927 A1 is semi-automatic, not full auto, so I would suggest a price of $1,200 to $1,500. It should have some accessories with it to make full price.

You might also see what Auto Ordnance is selling them for nowadays.
