I just purchased a prohunter camo in 7mm mag with a nikon 3.5x14 buckmaster and this thing sucks. My groups are all over the place.(4-5") I went over the scope mounts and everything else, any body else have one. What is yours shoot like?

Are you shooting handloads or factory. A friend of mine has a .270 in the Pro Hunter that shoots 130 TSX's out of factory Federals into 3/4" consistently. Or maybe you received a bum scope. Even the good companies screw up every now and then.

Check your ammo. Is it even the right stuff? What are you using for a rest? Is your scope adjustments bottomed out? Is your scope objective touching the barrel? Have you cleaned all the factory crap out of the barrel and contact points? Lots of stuff to look at before you write it off.

I should have stated that earlier I suppose, I am shooting Federal factory load ammo.

1 Vital Shock 160 gr Nosler partition 40 or so rounds

2 Power Shok 150 gr soft point 40 rounds

3 Fusion 175 gr. 20 rounds

So far the Vital shok is the most accurate, I get a couple that group nice then 2 or 3 out to lunch.

Shooting off a table with gun on a San Angelo bench rest. Seated etc. etc.

At first I questioned my technique and I made sure I eliminated as many variables as possible. This gun really does have reduced recoil so I'm sure a flinch is not the issue.

Some thing that struck me as funny when it is dialed in close for the 160's if you shoot a 175 it is as much as 6" off of the point of aim.

PS I went through the scope mounts and all seems tight

I cleaned the barrel after the first 10 shots then after the next 20, seems reasonably clean. Used Birchwood casey borescrubber and then their oil.

Is the foregrip touching against the action at all when you close the gun? Some of the synths can have that problem i've heard. If it touches - you're going to get some accuracy issues. All the pro hunters i've heard about shot well.

other than that - bad barrel? Very rare but it happens.

Did you clean the rifle before ya even fired it? They usually have some kind of preservative in them from teh factory.
How long of a wait between shots?

Ater you clean AND OIL the bore it will take several shots to settle down again. If youare breaking it in, shoot your groups, clean, fire a fouler or two and then start group shooting again. Different weights of ammo will shoot to different points of aim in many rifles (some rifles/cartridges shoot to same poi.) Keep working at it before you give up.

44Bore

Not even close to giving up just disappointed, I heard these were such easy shooters and had high expectations.
Of course I cleaned before taking the first shots.

Just hoping this does not end up being a barrel that only works with some obscure load.

I have been watching barrel temp, usually warm to touch but not hot 3-4 minutes between shots.

I got a pm from a GN member that says he had a similar situation on his 7mm-08, says he has the inside track to what is going on. Call me please or share the secret.:runaway:

I understand that different weights of ammo shoot different but how does a 175 grain end up 6" higher than a 160 grain?

Make sure the rear butt stock is tight, the screw is under the cap on the grip. Check that the barrel is free floated, you should be able to slide a 5 dollar bill under the barrel to the first screw. Pull the fore stock and look for a shiny spot where the barrel would be contacting the stock back of the rear screw. Relieve the spot with sandpaper if there. I've 3 7 rem barrels and all are shooters but I load so I'm not a big help in the ammo department.

Im with the guys who say "Dont give up yet" Ive got a 300 wsm that I thought was a poor shooter till I found one load that it just shines at.

Watch your barrell does not get to hot, Ive found that really effects accuracy and am sure that 7mm heats up pretty good.

Cheers!!

i will bet you that it is the scope ! My friend has a kimber montana in 7mm originally had a leupold scope on it , shot real bad 2 rounds in 1/4 inch group and third round way off base , this was happening consistently , he then went to the nikon buckmaster scope , things got even worse ....... went to a zeiss conquest , and no more probs , very accurate rifle. We were told that both of the models we had ,nikon as well as leupold , had issues that needed resolving(no further detail as to what the issues were) but my advice would be to try a diff scope if you have one and see what happens :) i'll bet it's the scope !

My uncle and I have had a similar experience with a .30-06 Rem. with a sporter barrel. I had a brain fart and asked him to take a cold bore shot. Wait 2 min. and take another, wait 2 min. and take another. This solved our problem. The bullet impact point changed drastically when the barrel had any heat at all on it. Letting it stay cool brought all the shots right in. This was his hunting rig so the cold bore was a very important shot anyways. The barrel wouldn't allow fast shot groups. It had to stay cool. Hope this helps.

I have a friend here who has 1 in .270 and .50 cal. muzzleloader and he is more impressed w/the ML barrel as the .270 seems to scatter the shots. Strange thing though, if Shockey uses them they must be the best.

Most inaccuracy issues with Encores can be traced back to pressure on the forestock. If it truly is a bad shooter though, T/C will happily replace the barrel.

At this point it looks like the hinge pin is the biggest culprit, terribly loose. I have ordered a oversize kit and some shims to adjust head space. Everything else looks ok.
