Anyone ever used anything other than BLO or teak oil or tung oil on an SKS wooden stock? If so, what did you use, and how well did it work? I was talking to a buddy of mine who used to be in construction about this, he swears that Thompson's Water Seal would work, but I dunno. Any thoughts?

Tws

TWS works well only on dried lumber that hasn't been previously varnished or greased or whatever. The Chu wood used in making the Chinese stocks has been lackered to hell and back so I guess you'll have to remove that stuff completely to restore some absorbency.
Frankly, I think that if you have to go to those lengths, once the wood is stripped bare, you'd be better off with a fine sanding followed by a Minwax stain (pecan or mahogany give a nice reddish tinge) and one or two coats of well rubbed Tru-Oil.
I think you'll be surprised by the results.
Good luck!

My Norc JW-27 has the same type of wood as the SKS stock, so I'm thinking about trying the dishwasher treatment and subsequent TWS-ing on my old SKS stock (which is currently just sitting in my closet gathering dust), and then if it works good I can do the same thing to my JW-27. I'd probably sell the SKS stock afterward, since I have no use for it.

However, if the min-wax and tru-oil would work better, I might try that instead. Wood refinishing isn't rocket science, I'm sure whatever I end up doing will work fine, I just don't want something that looks like it came out of the garbage can (which my JW-27 currently does, with all the drippy laquer and dings and dents).
