What are people's experiences in general with the uber-cheap 3-9x40mm scope that comes packaged with Stevens and Savage rifles?

I had one that I bought for $40, put on my old .30-30 Savage 170 pump rifle. I was really surprised how well it held zero. I sold that rifle, and the new owner is just as happy with it as I was. I never expected to get more than a season out of it, but so far as I know it's still holding strong.

Also have one on a Savage Model 10 in .223. It came with that scope, and I have just never gotten around to really using the rifle, and haven't replaced it. I shot it at the range once. The rifle hadn't been used in months or even years by the previous owner but it was only a couple clicks off in the scope - possibly explained by the fact I was using different ammo than the last shooter.

So what are most people's experiences with these scopes? I know they are nowhere near as clear as a good quality scope. But are they holding up for most folks? I often wonder why Savage would include them in a package if they are complete junk.

And before some ninny comes on here and says I need to go spend $800 on new glass -

I ONLY ASK OUT OF CURIOSITY. I'm neither planning to buy another one or trying to recommend them.

Very happy with my 3 Simmons 3x9x scopes...one on a 30-30 winchester, one mounted on a savage 12BVSS .223 and a Stevens 87 .22....Years of target pounding on the .223 and still keeps zero. Several Bushnells have been and gone during the same time on .270 and 30-06.

A good friend of mine who is also a member on this site just recently started hunting a few years ago. His hunting rifle is a savage factory package with the 3-9 Simmons. He shot a bear at around 150 yards two years back, and Muley buck at about about 200 yards offhand this season.
What makes this story entertaining however is that regular maintenance is lost on him (sorry Mike;)) and he absolutely SH$TKICKS this poor rifle and scope. It still holds zero and takes the abuse. No I don't own a Simmons.

I just bought a 3x9x50 and I have to say its clearer than one of my brother's Leupolds. Dunno about holding zero yet, cause I only fired a few rounds so far. I know I am gonna get stomped on for this post, but fanbois gonna be fanbois.

I have a cheaper model simmons blazer 3-9x50 on my .243 for my hunting rifle... I sighted it in 4 years ago and to this day is still a lazer beam! although it has decided to no longer be waterproof or fogproof and fogs like a BA$TARD now. Still got 4 Seasons out of it... going to pull it off after this last weekend of hunting and send it back and maybe get some warranty out of it :p

aso have one of the blazer 3-9x50.need to send it back after less than a box of ammo thru my 30-06. the cross hairs turn from proper position to look like an X whe you change the zoom/power.the crosshair is loose.it might just be easier to take it to my local gunsmith and get him to fix it.he repaired one of my bushnells about 10 years.after the crosshairs came loose after a serious fall where i sort of landed all my weight on the scope which was between me and the top of a steel culvert.

Mine's holding up relatively well... I've got a Savage 110 in .30-06, but I typically shoot 150 gr. bullets, instead of the 180's that seem to be the norm. It was sighted in before I took possession of the rifle (about two years ago) and hasn't seemed to lose zero yet. But, I don't shoot it much (maybe 200 rounds), and I'd say my groupings average about 6 MOA regardless, so I can't comment on the scope's effectiveness for a more experienced shooter.

As for the overall condition of it... the lenses look good, focus and zoom seem fine, and the illuminated crosshairs are fun. But... this is my first (and only) scope, so I can't really compare it to anything else.
