well last night I was playing arount thinking what can I do with the pile of 38 Special brass I have kicking around and got to thinking hey I could neck it down.

So what first, hmmmm, into a 308 die, looks interesting but not ###y yet

then what next... well 7mm is smaller.... so away we go :) looks not bad, I got that .277 barrel kicking around... but thats for a different project.

One more time, into the .257, and hey that looks not half bad, neck about 1/4" then flared out to the 38 case. Bet it would work well with 87 grn bullets.

Well today I went looking and wouldn't you know it, comparing what I had done to my big table of cartridges I find the .256 Winchester Magnum introduced in 1960 as a handgun cartridge.

.256 WM
.440" rim, .381' Base and 1.281" long

38 Special
.440" rim, .379" base and 1.155" long

so necking the 38 Special down basically gets you a .256WM thats .13" shorter

But I must say it looks interesting with a nice little 100grn rifle bullet on top :D

If you'd used a 357 mag case you would have got it right the first time. It is a bit of fun to play necking games (down, boy) isn't it.

Could it have been a 22 Remington Jet? S & W chambered revolvers for it but they did not work well at all.

Hey Woodchoper! Neck that brass down to .17, throw a 17 gr VMAX into 'er with some slow powder and get one of those 199 dollar H&R heavy barrel .17 HMRs to convert. Now THAT would be fun :D You could call it the 17W(for woodchopper)SSSSM

I'd friggin love to do something funky based on a .44 mag....I got this deerfield sitting here screaming to be modded, and seeing as I cant get the mag too take .454 casull....maybe I should look at a .44/.284 or something.

Now, if you guys want to impress me...take a 30/06 and neck it UP to .50...then make a barrel that'll shoot it :D

how do you neck down 30-06 brass to 8mm? :D

Todd, stop being obtuse, you know 303 meant forming entire case, NOT necking !
303, I formed 600 odd once fired win .270 brass down to 7x57, the cocky uses around 1300 each harvest to control his pigs (QLD).
It may interest you as an aside that I used a 5" angle grinder with a 1 mm stainless cutting wheel to roughly shorten the cases before trimming to length, each case was cut in around 1.5 seconds, this beats the absolute cr_p out of just using the trimmer by it-self.

yes digging around in my older reloading books I found out that the .256WM was based on the .357 mag case. So I dug into my can of misc brass for a .357 to neck down. :D

They actually look like a really interesting little bullet. 87grn or 100grn bullets would work well for plinking, shooting coyotes and beaver control.

I'm thinking that If I can find an old shot out or rusted out Win 94 I may have a little project. :D but its got to be cheap, because I'm a cheap bastard, I'de make one on an enfield but the action is just too long and it would look silly :D

Wood, change that to a .357 maximum and put it on a Martini cadet action and you have a winner, you even get to use the original extractor.......a bucket load of those were done over here.

The 38/357, 44Mag and 45LC have been wildcatted every which way. Some very interesting varminting cartridges were created. I think there are some 14's in there too. Google Calhoon bullets to see some really neat stuff.

If you go to RCBS and look up their list of wildcat dies, you will see only some of the past 'better mousetraps'.

No matter the practicality, this stuff is alot of fun and adds a sense of creation to this sport.
